SX VIPER ER Secondary >1" rotational slop?

The secondary moves at least an inch or more before the tourque is transferred to the track sprockets.

The chain is tight, there is no play on either jack shaft.

i've opened the chain case and everything looks good.

is this normal because it is a reverse chain case?
I honestly cannot remember if there has always been this much slop.

I checked an earlier model SX 700 and it has only 1/2 inch of play.
