I have a really nice Exciter I picked up last year with only 4000miles. There has been 2 times now where it uses an unbelievable amount of gas. 8a gallons went in 50 miles. I had filled up before that and put in 3 galllons and went 32 miles. I have gone through the carbs, new yamaha needle/seats, checked float bowl levels. I did jet down 2 sizes and runs great.... spark plugs are nice brown color. I don't see or smell any gas so it is not leaking out. What in the world could be the problem? I put a nice single ply track under it as well and that turns great. My dad mentioned on his arctic cat that the vent tube in the tank was plugged and it used a pile of fuel. I would greatly appreciate any help on this. I don't know where to look next. Thank you!!

Replace the needle jets with new. The top hole wears substantially, causing a very rich midrange and high fuel usage.
Stay with stock spec, however, do not go smaller.

He said he put new needles in already.
Could the previous owner have geared it way down for some reason? How many teeth does it have on the drive and driven sprockets? Stock is 18 teeth on the drive and 33 on the driven.
You didn't mention clutching at all, have they been gone through, cleaned, and checked for worn parts?
What is engagement rpm and peak rpm? It should engage at 3800 rpm, and go to 7300 rpm and hold there when wide open. I only mention engagement rpm because if it is different it is a sure sign that either something is worn or clutching has been changed. Holding peak rpm is also important, if you're overturning the peak rpm you are losing HP and wasting fuel.
Is it piped or did the previous owner mod anything else?
With all of the above being said, my piped Viper gets a flat 6 miles to the gallon...on trail, in powder, hill climbing...6 mpg.
8 gallons in 50 miles is better than I get, lol. But truly your exciter should do better if it isn't modded out.

No. He said he put needle/seat in.
Change the needle jet, sometimes also refered to as main nozzle, if they are still available.

I read it as needle AND seat.
