Trying to remove circlips from idler wheels with the channelock brand circlip pliers
As soon as I close the ring if I'm not putting my whole arm weight downward the plies slips out and the ring snaps open again.
Trying to wiggle the clip to raise it up just slips the ring off the pliers.
Trying to use a mallet to center the closed ring so I can raise it snaps the clip open again.

I use the old style circlip pliers with tapered tips. Keeps them from slipping off. If you can’t find a set try ones with tips that are just small enough to fit in the holes. The snugger the better. Also make sure there is no oil or grease on the plier tips or in the holes.

and have a small flat screw driver handy to wedge in and lift on the snap ring. done this one a few times when they are being stubborn.
