I set up my sync gauges on a 485 Phazer engine and noticed that the vacuum was very low on both carbs. It is about 1/4 of the reading on my other Phazer. I am wondering whether the low reading is an indication of weak/blown crank seals.
The engine was a freebie dropped off by a friend so I plan to change the seals regardless but thought it might not be a bad way to quickly check the condition of crank seals in future once I get a base line reading with a new set.
The only changes I made to the engine was to install a set of Boyesen Power Reeds and go to a single layer head gasket.
