Hi. I have a nice 98 Vmax 500XTR. Does anyone know if it should have a 3 layer or 2 layer head gasket.
Thanks
Thanks

with the quality of fuel now a days, i would only run the 3 layer. you can run a 2 layer but you need to have good 91 octane all the time or better. with 3 layer you can still run 87 if needed.

Thanks, I need to change my question a bit. I thought I had a 2 layer gasket but I have a 3 layer gasket already. Yamaha makes a 8AB and a 8CJ head gasket. does anyone know the difference. Is one thicker then the other, also Yamaha makes a 8CR and a 8AB base gasket for the 500. What is the difference. The aftermarket gasket kits go 94-99 and a different kit from 00-01. When I look up the OEM part numbers for head and base gaskets, they don't follow the same split. Any insight on this.
Thanks

The 8CR is for a 600, will not work on the 500.
There is an 8AB and an 8CJ
to my knowledge, they are both the same thickness.
I think the difference is the coolant passage direction.
The last year or two they made the 500, the coolant passage direction in the head had been changed slightly.
As maim suggests, you could take layers out and run a higher quality fuel. It may be ok on 87 still, but I can't guarantee that.
