One might assume that certain ignition parts from year to year from model to model might be the same. Twin cylinder coils? Stator assemblies, pulse coils, charge coils maybe even ECUs. I am fairly confident most ignition switches and kill switches from say early 90's through the 2 stroke models would be common? Not sure a parts # search would tell me that. Numbers might be the same, but model prefixes likely wouldn't.
I have this 500 XT guessing either a 97 or 98 model trailing arm sled that has lost it's spark. So far I have disconnected, the ignition switch and the kill switch, but still can't see any spark when pulling it over, manual start. The coil is suspect, and I discovered the black wire running to it was disconnected. Guessing it was a ground wire, but reconnected it and still no spark. I am reluctant to pull the engine to access the stator, so before I do this. I have some other Yamaha sleds and was considering swapping out the coil, seems like those on the older Phazers, or Exciters might be compatible for testing at least.
What about the ECUs? I have a 95 pogo stick model that has the ECU bolted to the air box, just like some of the later models, and am considering swapping those out again for diagnostic purposes, at least to start? I'd like to rule out all the external electrics before I have to resort to testing of the stator.

There is a voltage test you can do to the stator without removing anything. You can just unplug it down by the recoil to access the pins.
Someone else will have to chime in on the numbers you should want to see. I have not seen coils fail, although Im sure its a possibility.

Terminology, the white/red - white/green according to my SX700 service manual is the pickup coil, they refer to a stator coil white-white .36-.44 ohms. There is nothing there listed as a "source" coil, I am a bit confused with regard to the terminology, source, charge, exciter, pulse, trigger, pickup coil, guessing some are interchangeable. Still looking for a description of what each might contribute to generating the electricity, for ignition and additionally running the lights?white/red-white/green 200ohms

In any case, I appreciate the assistance.

Someone provided me with the testing procedure and resistance measurements. Appreciate the help. There is a voltage test you can do to the stator without removing anything. You can just unplug it down by the recoil to access the pins.

Does your 500 have the color wires that I mentioned? Just test them as I described.Terminology, the white/red - white/green according to my SX700 service manual is the pickup coil, they refer to a stator coil white-white .36-.44 ohms. I have yet to check, sitting out on the slab in front of the garage and it's 10 degrees this a.m. and windy. I'll get back.Does your 500 have the color wires that I mentioned? Just test them as I described.
90% of the time the stator is the trouble.I have yet to check, sitting out on the slab in front of the garage and it's 10 degrees this a.m. and windy. I'll get back.
The pickup coil is a small black box looking piece that mounts externally of the flywheel. It tells the CDI when to throw the spark.
The source coil provides the AC electricity for the ignition system. There have been a few different labels for it over the years.

So, now I'm 78 so going to compare this to the "points ignition system", the pickup coil acts like the points, and the CDI the condenser, although it must be a bit more sophisticated. I have been searching the internet attempting to get my head around just how exactly each of these components work. Not any real detailed explanations out there.
Still looking for some feedback on whether these CDIs, stators, with the source, pickup, or other coils are common to the other model years. I am aware the parts numbers may be similar, For example the ignition coils from the 95 and 98 models are the same part #, but the CDIs the 98 is 8CJ-85540-01-00 the 95 8AB-85540-00-00. Maybe the first 3 letter/number are model year next 5 identical, but not sure what the 01 or the 00 might designate. The CDIs are no longer available except for used units.
