One might assume that certain ignition parts from year to year from model to model might be the same. Twin cylinder coils? Stator assemblies, pulse coils, charge coils maybe even ECUs. I am fairly confident most ignition switches and kill switches from say early 90's through the 2 stroke models would be common? Not sure a parts # search would tell me that. Numbers might be the same, but model prefixes likely wouldn't.
I have this 500 XT guessing either a 97 or 98 model trailing arm sled that has lost it's spark. So far I have disconnected, the ignition switch and the kill switch, but still can't see any spark when pulling it over, manual start. The coil is suspect, and I discovered the black wire running to it was disconnected. Guessing it was a ground wire, but reconnected it and still no spark. I am reluctant to pull the engine to access the stator, so before I do this. I have some other Yamaha sleds and was considering swapping out the coil, seems like those on the older Phazers, or Exciters might be compatible for testing at least.
What about the ECUs? I have a 95 pogo stick model that has the ECU bolted to the air box, just like some of the later models, and am considering swapping those out again for diagnostic purposes, at least to start? I'd like to rule out all the external electrics before I have to resort to testing of the stator.
