Hey all I’m having a real hard time getting this srx 440 started, it’s a 1980 but running a 1979 motor, I have the timing set perfect 0.055 btc and the 79 cdi, there’s tons of spark. The issue is starting from scratch, tuning a set of vm38s off a 87 exciter, these have the coolant lines running through the carbs, they are blocked off, I swapped the bowls off another set of vm38s that didn’t have the power jets in the bottom so it’s a bare bowl, right now it has 380 mains, 35 pilots, O-0 needle jet, 3.0 cutout, 6dh1 needle at 3rd clip and air screw at .5 turns out. What’s happening is when the engine finally dries out I try starting it and it’ll fire for a second then shut off, no signs of life after the plugs will start getting wet and flood. I’m assuming it’s not misting properly and just dripping fuel in. Running Yamalube 50:1 and supreme. Oil injection disconnected. Stock pipes, uni filters oiled. I also checked the flywheel keyway and it’s tight no play so it shouldn’t throw off timing. Any help would be great I’ve been attempting different carb setups for a few weeks now and I’m losing hope.

Did you put new needle valves in? Sounds like its flooding right away.
Also make sure the diaphragms in the fuel pump aren't cracked.

Yep they are new needle valves and gaskets. Could the fuel pump be an issue if the needles are seating properly? I wouldn’t want to wreck the gaskets taking it apart to check. Update, threw on the vmax carbs with same 380 main 35 pilot 3.0 cutout, vmax 6DH1 needle 3rd clip and Q-0 tube air screw .5 turns out. Now it’s firing 2-3 times then dies, pull 2 more times same thing and plugs start getting a bit wet the more I pull it over, closer but still too rich any more guesses or better jet setup?
