Hi,firing problem on my vk 540 1991 and cdi is no longer available but for 1988 I have found 1
Looking for wiring diagram for both years to try to connect 88 on 91
I found manual 540 ef don't know for what year...
 
the plug might be different where it plugs in but it should work. one from an xlv 540 or vmax 540 would probably work as well.
 
csprl... I forget which parts I used to rebuild my 93VK . I know I used the flywheel as I wanted
the elec start . The donor was possibly a "SR540" . I would want to pick into the boxes of remains.
A few questions ... In Ontario ? Can you attach a pic of the one you need ? There is a good chance
I don't have one from the donor engine and just reused my original.

Sorry , I just educated myself and I didn't get any wiring harness with extra engine...
They both used the same pulsar and coils ..
Found this info about the wiring but 92-07-0.4x1 edition
This book shows the version with a 4 cluster plug , 2 males and 1 female.
My 93 uses 8au 85540-00-00 your 91 looks identical . 87R-85546-00-00
Any chance it subs forward ?

Did you buy it this way or have had it for years ?? Are you sure it is the cDI ?
Mice ate wiring in front of mine one summer.
I have never had Maim steer me wrong so far .. cut the wires mid way so you can
reattach to correct plugs if it doesn't fix it.

If new to sled . it has all sorts of things such as the TORS which will stop it
from revving up if faulty.

I live 200 km east of Quebec City.

I've had it for 15 years and I had to change the source coil because the heated grips were overheating it, so I disconnected them.

I had a problem with the electric starter and it was fixed. The wire rectifier failed, so I rode without a battery, and when I started it, it didn't run properly anymore, and eventually, it stopped working —no spark! The primary coil resistance was 0 ohms, so I bought a Kimpex coil, which, by the way, doesn't have the same value.

It's 3.6 ohms primary, while the 540EF manual I found specifies 0.16 ohms. And after changing the coil, there's still no spark...
 
I worked as a motorcycle mechanic for many years, and before changing the spark plugs, I want to check the wiring. However, the wiring diagram in the manual isn't for an '88 model.
 
you have to be careful with the 88 as it was the only year with 2 different wiring harnesses. 89 up they went with the e start only harness on all of them. i happen to have a non e start 88 and have looked into getting e start for it and discovered this.

there was a scrapper of yamaha, specifically vk sleds, in Quebec that i had heard of when a buddy was searching for a motor for his. do not have contact info sry.

What I understand is that cdi act as a relay for source coil and warmers but wires are different from 88 and 91
 
Wire bk/w is seperate on 88 and not on 91 andf can't find where they are going to connect it
I know it's for stop engine but 91 is on another wire...

I poked around and have never seen so many diff part numbers for
two CDI's that look the same in the pictures .. It's like they
changed them every year and not all 540 in same years used the same one.
All the used ones are east of you in NL Labrador . expect the dead ones are
sitting in back yards which make them hard to find.
Suggest finding a donor sled that matched the last wires into harness
and installing from the stator plate out.. More limited to get your elec start back
as the SR540 I used didn't have a ring gear.
Time for a VK Pro . Lot of them under 6,000 but on the island and they will have
lots of new problems to discover

Thanks Ron I think it's perhaps possible to conect88 on my 91 but I need a wiring diagram that is no more available from Yamaha to dealer
If you can try to find one would be great!

it was a tow truck company if memory serves and it was a hobby.
