My Speedometer works sometimes ... ?

I have a 1998 VMAX 600 SX and I had replaced the track this summer and then this winter my speedometer stopped working. It worked for awhile this year. This weekend I started taking things apart and took the cable off at the joint under the secondary and the cable spins freely. I then took the cover with the 90 joint off. The springlike shaft that comes out of the 90degree joint had pieces of wire wrapped around it like the spring shaft was unwinding. I think this is a shaft that can be replaced and may have to be put in the opposite way to make sure it doesn't unwind but I'm not positive. I may have incorrectly installed when I put the track in. I saw some earlier threads that said that this is supposed to be square - mine is slightly square with rounded edges. I tried to pull the shaft out of the 90 degree joint but cannot. Its in there good. Anyone have experience with this that can help me out.

i had the same problem once. Most often it is caused by the drive axle bearing going bad, and the misalignment causes the wire key to start coming apart and binding up. I had one stuck in the 90 so bad that it absolutely would NOT come out, and i ended up having to replace the 90. Just make sure that bearing is not shot, and make sure the speedo cable and speedo turn easily. Could've gotten some water into the cable once, and it froze and twisted the key off, thats happened too.

I finally got the little spring shaft out of the 90 the one end that was in the 90 was completely square the other end was round. I did notice when I took off the cover there was ice around the bearing and cover. This could be what made the spring shaft start unwinding. I'm going to try and get the part today. How hard is it to change the bearing - do I have to drop the whole suspension inorder to change it? - Or should I just change it to be done with it. LaLaLa

you just have to loosen off the track adj bolts and it should slide right off once you have the set screws out to change the bearing

Speedo drive

Make sure your speedo drive isn't seizing up. It snaps that square drive just as fast as a poor brg. Run that square drive in a drill and in the speedo drive, should be smooth running and not noisy.

The 90 degree joint turned very easily. Also the speedo cable turned very easily. I had a difficult time getting the spring shaft into the shaft. It seems that my old spring shaft had come apart and there was part still in the driveshaft. I tried everything to get it out. I was finally able to push the piece in far enough to be able to put the new spring shaft in and bolt on the 90. I also lubed it really good with white lithium grease - there was no grease when I pulled it off the first time. Thanks for all the help.

;)!
