My 01 SRX melted down the pto piston on Friday. I was suprised to find a hole melted in side of piston, about halfway down. If exhaust port is @12o'clock, it's located at about 10 or 11. The top on exhaust side is melted as well, but that part is what i expected. It happened at 8500rpm, 10-15*. I've run it in -10* for hundreds of miles and plugs look brown. Ideas on cause?? Seals?
Ported 01 srx. 151.3-150-150. heads have 0.010" shave.

How critical is octane in this setup? I did have to use a half tank of 89 octane to get me back to hotel.

Weird!! I saw that for the first time earlier this year. Turned out it was a blown seal..I'd definetly change them..especially since you've got the engine apart. Octane is fairly critical in SRX's with a cut head but I doubt half a tank of 89 would do it...but you never know...check the seal.

I ran my 97 700 sx that required 93 oct, 4 miles on 87 when it went. Octane is important when modded. Maxdlx

what seals are we talking about. when i was out riding over the weekend, a friend of mine burned his polaris down the same way. i thought it was a plugged jet or dirty carbs.

the crankcase seals, if they aren't sealing they let extra air into the crankcase, leaning out the mixture and burning a piston

If you and your buddy both burned down, and got gas at the same place, see where this is going. Can you say bad gas. Seems funny to have 2 sleds in the same party burn down. Maxdlx

The srx only requires 91 I believe, as long as your taking it easy 89 should be fine, I'd be more likly to believ crank seal or other crank problem

where did he say 2 people burned down at the same time?
Thx for input.
One other question- was running br9es, gap looks a bit fat(borrowed a plug when 9ecs fouled earlier that day). that would run hotter probably, but still not explain the hole. i'll check seal tonite.
how big of a deal to run 1 non-ported cyl with the 2 ported ones? getting desperate to ride!

i think....
i think it is a fuel issue, at 8500 rpm your cranking pretty good....in 10* weather.....89 octane (lower the octane hotter the burn)......at wot......i think its your fuel.

I'm always first to blame fuel...I blow up alot...
Check your crank seals!! I could have been fuel...but if it wasn't you'll be doing this all again next week.
I blew mine up at Christmas...and my buddy on the SRX popped his the same day...looked like it was a fuel issue. Mine had a crater in the center piston (like advanced timing...like fuel knock). His was exactly like you are discribing. We pulled his apart and the mag seal was toast...you never know. Do it right and don't worry.
