hey...speedometer broke on my 98 700sx. works for like 2 miles everytime i start it and ride then quits. people tell me that the crank bearings are going because of it. what does the speedometer have to do with the bearings? also...was riding tonight and it got boggy. found a fouled plug. put new ones in. wont stay runing on its own and wont go over 15 mph. also it is piped, v force reeds, and clutch kit.any help at all woud be good.
1ist thing, replace all the plugs and try it, 2nd thing your speedo cable drives off left side lower jackshaft or drive cog shaft....if that bearing goes out it can take out the speedo cable key. Look under secondary close to the belly pan bottom and you will see what I am talking about...take that apart and check the speedo key. (Square drive pin aprox .125x.125x 2" long)
check your reed valves, sounds like there bad!

attend to the speedo problem ASAP. Trust me, if you don't believe what could happen, just take at my recent post named "speedo no workey". The bearing if not making noise yet is definately on it's way out, and is a bitch when it goes. Don't get stuck 75 miles out like myself and have to ride back on one. Just do yourself a favor and take the time to get everything apart to the drive axle and replace all axle bearings when putting it back together. I'm sure somone here can give you an idea of how many there (just off the top of my head, I say 6). It'll be well worth the aggrevation that you won't have to experience.

the pto side driveshaft bearing is a very common bearing to fail because it is constantly sucepted to water and grime. If you maintain this bearing correctly, it will last a long time, but most people don't want to be taking it out and repacking it every 1500 miles. Its probably not really necessary to replace all of your other driveline bearings at the same time unless you have reason to believe they are bad as well. I have only seen a handful of the jackshaft bearings fail, and that was mainly because they had a huge buildup of belt dust on them, and it got around the seal. Take the cover off down under the speedo and inspect this bearing, you will probably have to replace it. You will most likely need a new speedo drive key as well.

I've had a bearing take out a driveshaft, weeks after the speedo quit working

if reeds are good and fresh plugs still provide boggy feel...it's because the drag on the bad bearing is affecting the performance of the entire clutch system....I E torque necessary to turn axle.....resistance has changed dramatically..

I just repacked my drive axle bearing (the one under the speedo drive). Take off the speedo drive cover and pull off the bearing seal. You will be abel to tell for sure if its good or not. Mine was basically goopy water sludge crap........ cleaned out the bearing and repacked.
I had one go bad on me in the UP on a TY ride in 2002 and rode it back like it was but was a real pain to get the old iner race off of the shaft. Had the same bearing in there ever since 2002 but i regrease it at least once every year.
i do not think that your bearing is bogging down your sled but I could be wrong......... i have been wrong before....... I said- I DO- once. I would think even if that bearing was froze up that you would just destroy it with a blip of the throttle.

just replace the bearing, why is this such a big deal? Replace the worn bearing and then go from there
