I just put a new belt on my 99 srx and at idle it has a squeal, what is most likely the casue? Idle rpm is right on at about 1800. I was also looking at the height of the belt on the secondary and it is just barely flush. The spec say 1.5 mm above the secondary, how do I get the right adjustment on the belt, add a belt shim even though it is a new belt. Is there another adjustment that I am missing? Just how important is it that it ride slightly above the secondary?

Belt Squeal
Sounds like you are needing some clutch alignment. Usually a squeal comes from a short belt. If you look at the back of your secondary there are 3 small bolts that adjust the deflection on your drive belt. By adding shims you will allow the secondary to close further, thus raising the belt. If you remove the small shims, you will lower the belt. With a new belt on my Viper, I will remove all the shim and add them back when I notice a boggy response on takeoff. Hope this helped you out.

check your center to center as well, so at least you have a solid starting point
Worn parts
I was having that problem w/ my SXR but I already had all of the shims out on the back of the secondary. Come to find out the three 8mm bolts were worn WAY down (all the way to the threads) and the steel piece that they bottom out on that is held to the other sheave w/ three phillips head screws was badly worn where the bolts had been contacting it. I flipped over the gold steel piece I reinstalled it along with three new 8mm deflection bolts (now with one thick washer) from Yamaha. Nice and quiet now!!! Simple too!!!
