97 SX7 Clutching

What would be the effect of changing just my helix to 51/43 and leaving the rest of my clutching the same? Good or Bad idea? All stock, 9830H with 96 studs. My sled revs to 8800-9100.

It probably won,t change rpm,s much. You also need heavier rivets in the cam arms. You should be 83-8500 rpm max.

At those rpm,s you would just spin the track more out of the hole. gotta get those rpm,s down by adding more mass.

Thanks again, I've just been reluctant to take the clutches apart but I already bought the helix so I'll be buying some weights too.

Regarding getting your rpms down, you dont necessarily need new weights, just new rivets.

If you dont want to mess around with installing new rivets, just have your dealer do it for you. Its a pretty quick job for them if you take the weights out and just bring the weights to them.

Thanks Otis, I did realize that, as I am planning to try Turks setup from the tech page with the std weights and 4.5g and 3.1g rivets with that helix I bought. I've never taken any CV clutches apart so I am a little reluctant, but I figure if I F it up I'll just ask Qs here on TY or take it to my dealer if I can't clean up my own mess. I'm mostly worried about getting it back together correctly.

its not too hard to do at all, and when you do it once you'll be thanking yourself, because then you will have no use for the dealer with clutch issues (which is good, because a lot of dealers mess them up) Good luck!!!

Any tips on changing the helix? Or do I just unbolt remove and install new. I'm guessing its under load and has a twist?

taking the weights out of the primary and changing rivets is easy, just added 4.5 to mine. No need to remove clutch to do this. Make you when you put the piece that hold the spring back on that you align the X's on on the cover the otheron the clutch. Drill out the old rivets out new ones in and use a vice to compress them till they do not move. When removing this cap becareful as it is under spring tension as well. As for the helix slowly losen the bolts evenly ( i find it easy this way). Good Luck and let us know.
