I live in mass and am thinking about buying a new yamaha from a dealer in new york.
talked to the dealer and he said because i am from mass i won't have to pay sales tax. i have it in writing / email. i am getting different answer on this sales tax thing from everyone i talk to.
anyone else out there have an experience like this and have any info??
i would appreciate any help.
please facts only. i already have plenty of opinions.

The fact is it depends on your state. i can buy a sled in NY, pay no sales tax, bring it to Iowa, and pay the sales tax when I license it. Your state may or may not charge. I find it hard to believe you can buy a high dollar item without paying tax. Maxdlx

Depends on your state. I buy sleds out of state (live in iowa) and dont pay take when I buy them, BUT do have to pay the tax when I register the sled. I do know MN residents dont have to pay tax if the sled is bough tout of state. I would call the MA DMV / DOT and ask them. ===SRXSRULE===

If he isn't going to charge you sales tax and you ride in NY and register there from out of state then you probably won't pay sales tax. I you have to register it in Mass and they collect sales tax you'll wind up paying it there.

my situation is that i live in mass and ride in maine. the last sled i purchased was never registered anywhere other than maine and i never paid sales tax, ever. this new sled will never see another state other than maine. i don't know how other states register sleds but in maine you can register at 1 of 1000 different places.
they do registrations in supermarkets, gas stations, general stores, hardware stores, just about anywhere someone is willing to do it.
basically my concern is with the ny sales tax. i just want to be sure this guy is not pulling my leg about it to make the sale, then when i show up he drops a bomb on me and i don't have the money to pay it. from what i can tell with the replys i am getting this should not be a problem.
does anyone on this board live outside of maine but register in maine and ever pay sales tax in maine????
thanks for the info guys

When you say "register" in maine.....I think your refering to a Maine Trail pass are you not? A State trail pass and registering a sled is NOT the same thing. Legally, your sled HAS to be registered in your home state for you to purchase another states trail pass and ride there trails. Many people get by not doing this, BUT it can get you into trouble. Many insurance policies require the sled to be registered and if you get in a serious accident this could be a big problem.....Been there Done that!! Be carefull. ===SRXSRULE===

i registered for the very first time (brand new sled) at berrys store in the forks maine.
I now register every year on line through the state of maine. the website is
www.state.me.us/ifw/licreg/resale.html
my sled and everyone i ride with has "never" been registered in any state other than maine. when i register i have never been asked for proof of ownership / title
or proof that any type of sales tax has been paid to any state "ever"
I just realised i have my registration with me here is what it says.
2004-2005 maine non resident season use registration issued by the inland fisheries and wildlife. clerk# 41 fee 68.00
with this came 2 stickers. beside the stickers it is written. your sticker # is considered your registration # affix 1 sticker to each side of your cowling.
display only the most recent maine non resident sticker on your machine.
this was issued through the inland fisheries and wildlife 41 state house station

i appreciate everyones help on this but i was basically concerned that i would be charged sales tax when i purchased the sled from the dealer. at this point i am positive i won't . new your state sales tax for that area was 8.25%
if i am charged sales tax when i register in maine then i will deal with that issue when it happens. but, i doubt it will happen since i don't know a single person that has ever paid sales tax when doing a non resident registration in maine.
Thanks for the help

Most, if not all states do not require sales tax added. Much the same way when you buy on Ebay. You Will though pay your states sales tax when you register it or... you must claim it when you do taxes.
You will not have to pay NY tax, BUT you will have to pay your state tax when you register it.

bleueje17. Are you from new york??
lots of different opinions. the majority seem to think no sales tax is paid to the dealer. thats good!! that was the problem question. i did not want an added cost when i showed up to pick up the sled.
anyone in here live in mass and "only" register in maine?????
if so, have you ever paid sales tax when you registered ????
147 views. somebody has to have an answer to this one.
please don't post your thoughts or ideas. facts only please!!!

I am from NY
Where you buy isnt the factor, but where you register it. States have set it up this way so you dont go to another state to chase alower tax rate.

Have friends that live and buy in Mass & NH and ride Maine only. No sales tax paid to Mass or Maine. NH is sales tax free.
