Has anyone played with these pumps, specifically the shims? What purpose do the shims serve? I assume you adjust the amount of oil injected by changing them around? Does anyone know what the factory setting would have been, or a good combo of shims for a stock engine?

Regards,

Glenn

It will adjust the stroke either longer or shorter. I have a book at home with the specs. If you need them I'll reply tonight if someone else doesn't. If it's an older Phazer and you have doubts about it, replace it. I failed to on mine and it was a $600.00 rebuild to save $80.00 on a pump. The only thing that didn't need replaced, rebuilt, or repaired were the heads. If it does scatter, I had my crank done in Green Bay for $300.00. Five new bearings, two rods, and labor.

Thanks for the warning Phazer. I have the pump apart (87 model year) and it looks fine other than the shims are a bit worn. I want to make sure it's shimmed correctly when I put it back together. The Yamaha parts page shows 3 different shim thicknesses available, .3, .5, & 1.0. I was hoping someone out there had shimmed these before and could share their their experience on how it went. If you can supply me the specs I would appreciate it!

OK...I'll just cut to the chase first off.
Min pump stroke: .006-.008
Max pump stroke: 1.064-1.071

Minimum: The measurment is taken between the bottom of the shim and the top of the housing that the plunger comes through. Actually, it looks like the "second step" down. "Not" the very top of the housing.

Maximum: The book "says" to measure in the same place but pull the cable out and hold it, then rotate the gear until the plunger raises to it's highest point. The bad thing is, the picture shows lines from the top of the nut to the surface that the "cover" bolts to. That's probably correct, otherwise your not going to come up with any measurment close to an inch.

If you need details, I'll have to scan the pages and e-mail them to you. Or better yet, give me a fax number and I'll fax them to you Describing it looks a little on the vague side. Honestly, you'd have to have a pretty bad oil pump to have to change the shim. The one I had go bad looked good but she still took a dump on me.
