I was riding my 02 viper this weekend when all of a sudden the dash went dim, not speedo, no tach, just dim and the headlights and tail light were also dim. I don't have a clue as to what this could be, but i opened my hood and it all went back on again, but then went off about 1 block later..

i was told this is a stator and that it would cost $550 to fix..

Can this be the problem?

is the stator easy to replace myself? or is it complicated?

any help is greatly appreciated. need advice.

check the wiring harness under the motor, disconnect the wire that goes to the headlight and pull it through, comes out around the brake rotor, and if this is the problem the wiring harness should be bare without a rubber coating and is shortening out on the other bare wires or the frame, i had the same problem with my srx

if you hit the brakes and headlight went dim sounds like your stator. by your thermostat housing theres a rubber boot that hides 5 wires . 2 that are grouped together white with a red tracer and a white with a green tracer , disregard these. the other three are white only, they come together in a plug, unhook these and test with a multimeter, either with the ohms scale or with continuity if no continuity you have an open winding , this is a job you can do yourself with a 10.00 harmonic puller from pep boys .

crap, reading the rest of your post beacause reading is fundamental, RIF sounds like a short as lightning quoted, sorry.

I had a similar problem it was a short in the tail light, but check your wireing harnest thats a common problem on vipers.

just had the exact same prob on my 03 viper took it to the dealer and it ended up being a wire coming out of the stator rubbed through and was shorting out, they fixed the short and it works fine but they are ordering me a new stator under warranty.
