I was riding all day, turned it off to take a break, didnt want to re-start. Got towed by an Polaris, we stopped 10 minutes into the tow. I decide to give my sled a pull for fun, BOOM, starts right up. Now, I get home, no more spark at all again.

Plugs are new. When I pull the cord, I can get the headlight to come on dimly. I tried a few things, TORS is bypassed.

I did changed the plug caps a while back and (not sure if this was the right move) I used the lower resistance type of caps. They were NGK's. Can the lower resisitance ones have caused something?

Plugs are just wet, and there's no spark at all.

If anyone knows what I can test, try out, to narrow down this problem, enlighten me please.

Thanks.

not sure what to test, but I had that happen on my old 97 600 sx and it was the stator. loose wires and decayed inside, just bouced around enough and it would run. shut off and that was it. sometimes hit a hole and it would die. worht a try I guess, but not sure how to test, sorry :(

disconnect the kill switch at the bars and the key switch and see if it sparks then. If that doesn't work disconnect the black / white at the cdi box that will take the whole harness out of the equation. At that point you go to the electrical parts.

The stator in this machine has 3000 KLM's on it... I hope to hell it's not the stator cause they are $$$

I will look into it today,

Thanks soo far.

Alright, bypassed everything (ign. TORS. killswitch). And still, no spark. Cleaned up all the grounds too, no spark.

How do I test the coil?

ohm meter. post what the resistance is on the stator coil. just go agross the wires and check it to the case as well to make shure its not shorted to ground.

Alright, I removed the handle bars and fairing, found 2 wires exposed and rubbing on the chassis. The part of the frame that holds my bars on was broken, lol, this might exlain the sloppy steering. I will get this welded.

I brougt my coil (ign.) to my fathers and threw it on his Phazer, fired right up, so I know thats good.

What is the Yellow / blue stripe wire coming from the stator???

Anyone know of a wiring diagram? I would REALLY appreciate even a scan page from the service manual, my local dealer wouldn't help me out even if his life depended on it.

Also, how do you want me to test the stator? which wires whould have what resistance? do I test resistance to ground or to another wire???

Thanks.

EDIT : Hey Maim, I am in Chelmsford, small world.

ALSO. when bypassing the killswith / ignition, do i then add a jumper wire to complete the circuit or leave it open???

leave the circuit open when you bypass the kill sw. the ignition needs a complete circuit.

lol i actually live in azilda. id offer to come over and help but i work from 3:30 pm -12:00 am. so its pretty hard to go over after supper to give you a hand. i put sudbury in avatar cause it appears on larger maps and arent we "the greater city" now?

All Our snow is leaving and my sled is sitting in the shed!!! GRRRRR.

I took the stator out today, I narrowed it down to either this or the CDI.

The wiring harness is fine.

I will bring the stator and CDI to Sudbury Cycle and marine, and maybe get it tested. (if they can do this). They aren't the most helpful bunch, specially with older sleds...

Might just have to bite it and get parts... and hope to hell I am not wasting 450$ on a Stator...

ALSO, the ignition, has to be OPEN circuit for a start condition... found this out today.

its the cdi if the harness is ok because the cdi controls , how long the spark is and when, borrow one from someone first, to try first because they cost about $90(can)

Dont think it could be the stator?

As I said, when I crank the sled over, i DO get the headlight to dimly light up...

So I dunno. troubleshooting is soo much fun

Turns out it is the stator, It tests out open circuit across 2 coils (the 2 that have to do with the ignition.) This just pissed me off. Looks like this stator is 1993 Specific too, just fawking great. :o|

o, got a pipe and dying to try it out huh? that REALLY sucks. see if there is one shown on the port washington fiche, and see if they can overnight it to you :)

I will actuallly keep an eye on Ebay, and might get lucky...

Theres a couple 1992 ones that went by, I bet they would be close... Maybe just a matter of soldering my connector to the 1992 part, not sure, I might risk it if it means getting one for under 100$...

Dealer wants 450 Cnd.

I had a 93 sx and put a psi pipe on it and had nothing but problems with it. The y pipe is longer on the sx's I would relly watch your pistion wash. Of course you will have to rember this till next winter. That bites

Do you remeber your jetting? did you melt a few pistons?

there was a guy parting out a 93 exciter sx a week or so ago and said to email for more parts :) just do a search for exciter sx
