Clutch rivet weights for a 96 Vmax 600xt

I'm doing some clutch repair on my 96 Vmax 600xt. I need some suggestions on what rivet weights to use. The motor has the thin head gasket in it. (The .8 or .6, I don't know which.) The sled ran ok, but then again I don't know how much better it could run. This is my first sled to own and it was used, obviously, when I bought it. The weights now have a mark in them from where they ran on the roller and it must have vibrated a mark into the weight. I talked to both Port Yamaha and North Country and they can get me the parts. The current weight has two rivets in it. The rivet closest to the pivot bolt is like a annodized gold-ish green and has a head that is almost flush on one side and the tail that barely protrudes the other side. The far rivet is much larger but the same color. It has a large thicker head (1/8") and the tail end protrudes about 3/8" on the other side.

North Country said he thought Yamaha had a clutch weight kit when they did the head gasket.

So, basically, what weights should I get? I ride mostly trails, no lakes. We do most of our riding around Gaylord. There is one week a year where the guys and me go to the UP and ride hard. Of course that's the trip where I put on the most miles of the season, probably 400-500+.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

instead of buying the rivets just buy the bender shift kit for it. i had the same sled. i didnt like the stock clutching. so i put the bender on and it was night and day difference. comes with all the parts

I had put some clutching recommendations on the Tech Page, under clutching and jetting chart. It is hard to tell what rivets are in the arm by looking at it. Weighting it on a grams scale should get you close. I dont know the weight of that arm off the top of my head, but you should be able to ask your dealer. It will be in the tech update book or on a shop poster.

SRXDude, I found you settings. I am working on finding out what spring I have in the primary. (I didn't pull the clutch to bring it back with me) I do know that the weights I took off are from a '95. Something like an 8CA instead of the 8AB. They did adjust the jetting after the gasket mod. Would I need to change anything (other than the clutch) if I used your clutching?

Gripper, I emailed Bender. Where did you get your kit from? What other mods did you do?

dnale i called bender and they set me up. with the clutch kit. the only mods i had on my 96 xt were the bender clutch kit and i put some Vtech plastic ski's on. and studded. i also had my shocks rebuilt by maxximum performance . the guy from maxx called me and asked me if i ever bottomed out. he said they had a stiffer spring. and i never bottomed out again. it was a very nice sled. but it got stolen. never saw it again. even if they dont show the kit on there web site they probaly still have them. give them a call.

Dnale, the 95 clutching would work also, as the 96 with the thin head gasket ran like a 95. I ran 148.8 mains with the thin head gasket and the cold air block off kit with alternate air kit. I ran those jets down to -40F without a problem.

Hopefully I will know what spring I have by this evening. I called Bender hopefully I'll get some info from them soon too.

Any other tips for this sled?

I might have to look into that heavier spring the gripper was talking about. I bottom out every now and then.

I had the heavier spring also. It helps, but is still was a little weak for me. You talk to Maxximum Performance and they may be able to valve the shock different also.

I found an old (02)Bender sale flier . They had one for a 96' in there @ $139, part # GYTC01. Hope this helps. Let us know how ya make out if you get one. I have the same sled.

Bad news, at least for me... The spring in the primary is a black one. Great. I still don't have the clutch off. Can I replace the primary spring without removing the clutch?

you can replace almost everyting without taking the clutch off the sled. Just pull the belt, and remove the six bolts from the clutch cover. From there you can change springs, weights, rollers, etc..

In our 95 we had good luck with 89A10 weights, and a 45/41 helix with the green spring at 60 or 70

Ok, I think I understand what I need to do...

I need to pick up a new spring just to be safe (ok, I'm already pony-ing up enough cash.) I think I'll try the recommendations of SRXDude. I sure hope they are spot on cause the morning after I do this I'll be in the UP for almost a week. I can't have this fail me.

I thought the primary spring only went in one way, I didn't know there were different "advances" in it.

Great! THanks Ryan.

Are there any other suggestions out there? My luck this think will have had the weights from a 95 cause the clutch is a 95. It's not supposed to be... I talked to the owner (original) and he said everything was stock but he had a friend rebuild the clutch that's why he knew nothing about it.

Thanks again!

SXRDude...you have a pm!

SXR, I sent you a pm with some ?'s . I think I'm more confused now than ever (if that's possible).

Help!
