I recently ran my chaincase out of oil and wondered if the chain has seen its better days and is stretched out to the point where I should replace it. It is off a 99 MM 600.

I hope I can explain this understandably. If you hold the chain on the sprocket at say 9 and 3 o'clock position and you can pull chain slack off the sprocket at the 12 o'clock position then it got stretched. Any wear marks on the sprocket teeth means time to replace. A neighbor got back from the mountains with a bad set due to plug coming out the bottom of the case. He had the stretch and bad wear on the teeth of sprocket. Viper XC

Look for weak or broken links in the chain.

If it was me id take it off to inspect better. Better doing that than going with it looks okay and having it snap and cause more damage to the case itself just my .02Turk said:Look for weak or broken links in the chain.
