My sled is a 2002 viper with 5000 miles this week
when I start my sled up for the first time, for the day the red light flash and shows he coolant icon. so motor is stone cold

So I know its not overheating as I am riding down the trail flashes on and off
but it's hot or overheating. No antifreeze blowing out

Hard to get a reading seem like a flash. than a pause
with 3 or 4 in a row. Then may not flash for 10 miles

I replugged all my wire and seem to go away tell I trailed it up north and started all over.

Do I have a bad tempr sensor?? How do I check it out??
Can it be ohmed out ?

I have has a new water pump put in last yr.

DO you have any ideas ??

If I look at the codes they show really only 2 problems. Temp Sensor or wiringproblem.

Thanks Hilltop

It's flashing trouble codes. Could be anything from a thumb warmer problem to a TPS fault. The length of time for the flash, time off, and how many times it flashes tells you what the code is for. I believe there is a chart for it in the tech pages, also this info is in the Viper service manual.
It is mormal for it to flash on start up, this is a self test.

You may very well have a bad sensor. There is a tech update on this particular item that includes a flowchart on how to diagnose it. This is a warranty item as long as it is still on warranty. Gauges are indeed better than lights, but warning lights are hardly useless when they work properly. The diagnostic codes shown by the Viper gauge was the best in the industry when it came out.

I installed a camoplast 1.25 predator track. Since then Ive noticed my Viper heat light comes on easier ,esp if the trails are a lttle hard. Even when I'm riding slow, I guess at slow speeds it doesnt kick enough snow on the front heat exchanger I plan on installing a rear heat exchanger soon.

BlueYamadog

I have add the extra cooler in the back made a lot of differance when going
fast on those big lakes. I hope is just the sensor. I plan on selling it or trading it
this yr.

I have a used rear heat exchanger from a SXR700 (smaller than a Srx exchanger) But would this do the trick?

hilltop, if it is blinking 8 times in a row, then it is exactly what mine is doing and has been doing for the past 3,000-4,000 miles. 8 times mean there is a short, break in the wire, etc for the thermo sensor. i found on mine that the plug that plugs into the thermo sensor on the head is loose. if i wiggle it, it will go away for a little while but just starts up again. this season i just kinda gave up on it, i know what it is and i know its not overheating so i just ignore the flashes, but thats just me. gonna be hard to sell mine to someone when its doing that though

its not the sensor that is bad, it is the plastic plug that plugs into the sensor. it doesn't snap tight and the wires don't hold tight in the plug.

so can't you just get a new plug then? Even just cut the wires and splice in the new one if you need to. I dont know off hand where it runs to, and i'm not home to look, but it cant be too bad.

there is no part # for just the plug, just the entire harness. i'm not sure how my dealer got just the plug the first time it was fixed without the harness. never bothered to really look into it, i probably should though since i'm gonna sell it.
