I have read on here how ported SRX's and big bore SRX's have more top end - but I have also read that they still run at 8400-8500 rpm - how are they getting more top end at the same rpm? - taller gears?

Look at it this way, a 305, 350 and 400 chevy all run the same block, w/ a big diff in Hp. Same with a big bore srx. You can make more hp out of a big bore motor at the same rpm. Maxdlx

bigger bores allow more area for combustion, which means more power if it is controlled and calibrated correctly. Porting allows more power because the porting changes how the gases flow, increasing the power by allowing the gases to flow faster

I understand all of that, what I want to know is why they would be faster on top end if they were still running at 8400 - 8500 rpm

the srx is not limited in top speed by its gearing in stock form, if you run into the gear wall, its pretty easy to change gearing

In other words, there is more gearing left to use, and the extra power from porting/big bores uses it with more aggressive clutching.

depending on the set-up, they'll run out of jam before they run out of gear.

and if your set-up is good, it's awfull easy to change your ratio for more topend, or just leave top-end as it was and enjoy more pull

as junior basically said, the srx is overgeared from the factory, as are most stock sleds.

and you have to overcome a simply physics thing.... takes a certain amount of power to pusha certain amount of weight. power goes up, weight is the same so it gets faster as the other guys say it is overgeared. and more power to overcome the wind resistance ;)
