My srx is hard to start after being outside one night.when its -5 degrees celsius outside i have to pull the rope 5-10 times with full choke before it starts, any ideas?/max

No matter how perfectly my 01 was adjusted (yes the carbs clean as well) it always took around 10 pulls after a sub zero night. It's the nature of the beast.

I think that is somewhat normal. My 98 srx, same thing, Viper a little better. Once it's warm, good for the day. I always try and keep it topped off with fresh fuel when it sits outside at camp or what not. :yam:

yea the SRX always takes a few more pulls than the SX 700R on the cold mornings, but they both start great during the day.

Been there, done that. Please reference http://www.totallyamaha.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8904&highlight=hard+starting

for a description of my similar problem. One thing I did do was to install a fuel shutoff valve. It appears that what is happening is the fuel is leaking out of the supply line back into the tank after sitting for some time. I installed the fuel shutoff valve which is a good safety measure --- research this on this site if you want --- also I kill the engine at night by CHOKING it off, rather than cutting the ignition. Try it ...

Choke it out ONLY when it is really cold and you anticipate the problem ... If you ALWAYS choke it out, you may damage the cylinders. This happens because the excessive gasoline will wipe the oil off the cylinders and rings and then when you go to fire her up, there is little lubrication ... over time this will result in premature wear and engine failure .... BUT ... on those cold nights, choke her dead. You will find that she lights right up on one or two pulls in the am. ESPECIALLY if you also install the fuel shutoff valve (the theory here is that there is a small leak which is allowing air to enter the line and allowing the gas to siphon back into the tank). If you have a valve, you are eliminating the air leak and/or the movement of fuel.

Good luck.

I tried the choke trick on our last trip and it really did help. I had read it on here and thought I would try it on a cold morning. 4 pulls and it fired up. Normally it would have been around 10. Great trick!
