How well (Or poor) does the Mountin Max do in the trails compared to a Sxr? Does the longer track really kill the handling?

I had 3 of em & they do surprisingly well on trails. Just make sure you pull off into deep snow once in a while to lube the sliders.

Depends on the trails. If all you do is ride groomed trails, then you may not like the reduced top speed compared to the SXR. The MM has 8 tooth drivers and lower gearing, so it tops out around 85 or so. The 2" track won't hold up too well on hard trails if ridden aggresively. Like Turk said, you have to jump off into the soft stuff once in a while to keep the hifax and track happy.
On the other hand, if the trails are rough, the longer track bridges the bumps better and actually feels better to me. I won't ever own another 121 machine. 136 and longer is more comfortable and 136-144 isn't that much different in handling from the 121. If you're lucky enough to be the first on the trails after a storm, and before the groomer, the longer track is worth it's hard trail shortcomings.
The only other issue I have with the MM on the trails is that I wish the front had more travel. 6" is OK, but more travel would sure be nice.
Just my LONG $.02

Its great in my opinion.
The rear end works suprisinly very well but the front end is too short for the big stuff.
It doesn't feel as narrow as it looks. But the track grips alot more so don't accelerate too hard out of corners or you won't make it .
It tops out at around 140-145 km/h, but 0-100 goes very quickly.
The thing is you'll have problem with the track/sliders. I completly destroyed (with half the lugs missing) the stock Yoko track after 7000 km. I now have a 2" Camo on it, hopefully it will hold up better.

It's all in the setup and a few mods here and there will work . A MM setup for the steep and deep is down right tragic on the trail....and the other way around if setup for trail will fall on its face on the hill.
As for how long tracks work on whoops and bumps on the trail...anything longer than saaaay 141 is a nightmare! The extra length actually would prevent your skid from attaining the desired "drop in" effect and you won't be able to use the full travel, if it traverses the tops of the 2 bumps it can't extend thereby killin you on the next bump cuz you cut the travel down.
Just my opinion. I suppose if you going fast enuf you just gonna skip over anyway.
