i was thinking of removing my electric start. i am looking to lose weight (getting stuck off trail sucks!) and i really dont need it. i heard i should'nt just remove it because of problems with the electrical system. what do i have to switch? how much weight will i lose? thanks

If it's an ER and you just remove the electric start and battery etc, it will not run because it needs the battery to be hooked up. Now obviously there would be ways to bypass this, but you would probably have to get a part or two from a non-ER viper.

There is a condensor under the headlamps on the old sx sxr chassis that needs to be added to them to take the electric start off. I assume its probably the same deal on a viper. J

I just put an electric start in my viper. to remove one I think you would remove the starter, battery, battery box and wiring harness on top of the battery. When you unplug the electric start harness reconnect the main harness back together. The electric start harness kind of "t's" into the main harness above the right footbox. The connectors are all keyed different so it should be obvious how to reconnect. you will need to wrap tape around one small (three pin?) connector so it won't short on anything...
If you want to test this theory before removing all of the hardware it should be easy enough to do the wiring first and try to start it up. you will have to loosen the plastic shroud to get to the harness connectors.
let me know if you have questions, I can try to help.

oh forgot, there is a small black box just on top of the foot box that is part of the electrical harness too. That comes out with the harness. Follow the wiring from the relay/fuses on top of the battery...
probably the hardest part will be unbolting the starter motor bottom bolt. It is tight. if you have small hands you can reach it. Hard to see unless the primary is off. you will probably have to remove the airbox to pull the electric start harness from the sled.

you need two smoothing coils. they plug in to the right of the tank. the older ones dont work. you will need viper or rx style. plugs are different. i have a set, 40 shipped

I'm not sure about the smoothing coils being talked about in this thread. My electric start kit from yamaha didn't "add" anything to a Non-ER sled. Does someone have a picture of what they are talking about?

they look like two rubber covered dcell batteries with a black and white wire. they act as a battery and absorb spikes in current and smooth out the votage. without them a vipers tach will do some wacky things. if your sled came without electric start then they may still be attached to the sled and just unplugged.

BE and I are talking about the same thing part 35
Its part 35 in this diagram.. Your tach will be wacky as BE said.

Seems like a real headache just to loose 15 or so pounds. I really don't think it will help a whole lot in the stuck department.

Thanks for the picture jwiedmayer. BETHEVIPER, it makes sense that yamaha wouldn't include part 35 when you add electric start to a non-ER sled, but they wouldn't be there if you were removing electric start from an ER sled. n2oiroc should have the info he needs to decide.
