Im looking at a 97 600 MM with 6400 km on the odometer. It was rebuilt in Jan 2000 at a cost of $2800 CAN when it had 5400 km. The diagnostic on the engine was as follows: pressure test engine OK, 0 psi MAG and 115 psi PTO, top end disassembled... 0.65mm gasket; gasket needs premium plus... crowns on both pistons erroded. MAG erroded until ring caught/broke causing cylinder and head damage. Crank checked OK...checked carbs 150 main 65 pilot...150 too lean causing failure
At the end of the day new cylinder and head MAG side and two new pistons, rings, pins, clips... new 157.5 main jet, 60 pilot and new bushings in primary and secondary clutch, I think three in total.
Its a good price at $2500 CAN. Its a chance for me to upgrade to a newer machine vs a 92-94 Exciter. Maybe the meltdown was bad luck or maybe it was abuse. Does a machine ever recover from this type of meltdown or is it destined to have problems? Would you buy it or pass? Opinions please!!!!

Sounds like the smoked components were replaced, you got half a new top end. Jetting caused the problem not voodoo. If you like the price I say buy it. I burnt up 2 of 3 pistons on my 700 (running lean) . Rebuilt the top end and it's been great since.

If it had 5400km before the failure with 150s, it wasn't too lean. Stock jetting for that model was 151.3 and that's way rich. I ran a 97 600 XTC with 150s at -10F and 300Ft altitude with no problems until the piston ring pin failed on a +30F day. I'd say the failure was a result of the known piston problem on the 97 600 engine, not the jetting.
According to the jetting chart, 156.3 is good to -50F at sea level. 157.5 would be ok for an Arctic Submarine but ungodly rich for a sled. If you have twin pipes though, who knows.

I have heard of piston pin problems on the 97. Meltdown or the ring pin fell out. Either way, if it was rebuilt in 2000 with the newer pistons, you shouldn't have to worry with it. If you get a fresh engine out of deal, bonus.

Just realized that the 97 MM 600 had the smart carbs, so my previous post about the 150 jetting may not be 100% accurate. But I still think the failure was a result of the piston problem.

Well that does it. I'm buying it. I just called the guy and made the deal. I pick it up late Friday nite and will be riding it early Sat. morn. I am so excited I don't think I'll sleep... I can't wait to unload that sled and spin that track...this is a great step up from the Phazer II, which I really like, but all that suspension gives me a chubby. Thanks alot for all of your input and suggestions. I'll look into the jetting when I get it and confirm with the local Yamashop. Thanks again.
