Advantages and disadvantages of a 9 tooth or 8 tooth drivers

my understanding is dropping from a 9 tooth to a 8 tooth
a) gives more clearance for deeper lug track
b) drops gear ratio equivalant to about 1.5 to 2 teeth on top gear in chain case
ie...22 top 42 bottom with 9 tooth would be about 20-42 with 8 tooth drivers.....
i found running 8 tooth anti ratchet drivers, top end was lost but hole shot was incredible.....

Doesn't dropping down to 8 teeth also slightly reduce the approach angle of the track, ie improve the ability of the back end to get on top of the white stuff?
 
I think 8 tooth drivers would make it worse?
the only reason mountain sleds run them is for clearance
the bigger the driver the better?
 
8 tooth drivers will also make the approach angle steeper, not something you want to do. The only reason 8 tooth drivers are used is to allow for clearance. Otherwise you would have to do a drop and roll on your chaincase.
 
Im trying to find 8 tooth drivers for my srx. But no luck in the stores near me.
Are there any Yamaha oem 8 tooth drivers that would fit? Part numbers?
Anyway, where can I find some?
 
Are there any issues with slider wear when changing drivers?
When the approach angle gets steeper the track will get closer to the sliders in
the front of the bend. And they will start to wear at slightly other places.
Will the larger idler wheels still cure the wearing issues?

Im thinking of installing the 8 tooth drivers for two reasons. First to get the gearing down a bit. Think it will get from 1.65 ti 1.86. Second is just clearance. I would like to have a ripsaw track or maybe 9818 and be able to stud.

Is it possible to run those tracks without removing the heat exchanger protectors when running 8 tooth drivers?

yes, the protectors can all stay in with the 8 tooth drivers so that you are safe to stud it
