The machine shop that I have been using has recently closed their doors for good. I need to find another shop that does good work at a reasonable price, hopefully in southeast Michigan. There are a ton of machine shops in this area, and I have several friends that either work for or own them. However none of them are setup to do snowmobile cylinders right now.
Anybody got any good contacts for a shop that is good at 2-stroke cylinder boring and piston matching?
I have a Rotax 583 to do right now, but will have more soon.

Thanks for the info Allen, all I need is a bore, finish, and fit (pistons) on a Rotax 583 right now. They are not nicasiled stock on this engine as it has cast sleeves. Do you think I should consider nicasiling them? On a cast sleeve? I would also have to worry about ring choice, and adjust piston clearance, would I not?

if they aren't nicasiled stock i wouldn't nic them, might be kind of a hassle to get the tolerances right for the different material

This 1996 Formula Z 583 has steel sleeves that do not appear to have any coating.

ding, clean out your pm box including the sent messages. pm bushman asking him about boring services, he has used several places over the winter and has good feedback on them. ski

Olav did my boring 2 years ago so all I needed was replating this year, We use Fotchmans CarQuest in Petoskey for machine work when needed. Ding the only people we used down state was Doug from Detroit Diamiters in Walled Lake. They did a lot of NASCAR engine blocks back in the day before everything went in house.

No offense to most folks, but take it to somebody with a good reputation! The cheapest isn't always the best! I've seen alot of cylinders come in that when checked for "roundness" after they were bored you wouldn't believe how "out-of-round" some people can do that job! If you want to go with nicasil get an aluminum sleeve, remove the cast iron sleeve and install the aluminum one then have it nicasiled. Just my .02!

Thanks a bunch for the input guys . . .
Man I am always cleaning that PM box out, I need to see if Tom can raise my limit. I am back down to 37 messages now.
For this engine (Rotax 583) I think I am going to go with cast pistons and just have the cast sleeves bored out. He (my boy) is on a very tight budget. He hopes to get another year out of the sled before parting it out or selling it outright. Hopefully he switches to Yamaha.
I do like the idea of switching to aluminum sleeves and nicasil coating though.
Sounds like Millenium Technologies has very good measuring and boring equipment. They must be quite busy as they haven't responded to my request yet. I don't know how the other shops compare.
BRP pistons only seem to come in 1 oversize of +0.25 mm which is only about .006" over. I think I need the cyls need to be bored at least .020" over based on visual inspection. I know I want to stay away from Kimpex pistons, but are there any other aftermarket cast pistons available that are any good?
Do you guys have an accurate way to measure the depth of the scratches prior to boring? I have always waited for the machinist to go through the boring process to see how deep they are.

Sorry, Olav does his machine work in house. It sure seems like you would be able to find some 583 cylinders around for little or nothing @ this point.... not much demand for them anymore? Does SPI make a set of 20 over pistons for the 583? I will ask the Jimmers brother if he has any 583 cylinders left, He had a bunch of 440, 583 & 670 cylinders @ one time.

lol sorry again! SPI is a lesser expensive brand of piston sold through JR GRAHM, Dennis kirk, Marshall Dist, Bell & the like. Seems like a lot of the DOO guys on snowest like them for the price. Food for thought is a Wiseco dealer pays around $40.00 per piston, Then someone like Hauck turns around gets them coated & sells them for $150.00 ea.

SPI, Wiesco, etc any of em will work if you do the bore job right.......It's all kinda like it's said in the movie Armaggedon "Russian components, American components, all made in Taiwan!"

Cylinders are off to Millenium Tech. If they can be bored, honed, and piston matched it will only cost $100. Not too much more than I used pay for boring, and probably a better job too.
It is likely that I will have to go with Wiseco pistons though as they are the only ones who make a +2.0 mm size. If damage is beyond +2.0 mm, I will be looking for another cylinder or sleeve.
Thanks for the help guys.

You can try Nik's Pro X pistons. LA Sleeve is the main distributor. Many of the Japanese makers use Nik's pistons as original equipment. I believe they are available up to .040'' oversize. Usually the same price as Wiesco but they are cast pistons. I have had great luck with them in watercraft.

whatever you do don't run parts unlimited pistons. My cousin put them in his indy 500 (low rpm, low power engine) and he broke both piston skirts in 250 miles. The cylinders were still well within spec as well. Put Polaris pistons back in it and it has been running great (as great as a poo can) for 2,000 miles.
