Leakdown test on engine. Pull out the powervalves & check for pulled out cables & frayed ends on cables. Do a crank runout test, check w arm for cracks; check primary clutch for cracks. these should be done prior to even buying the sled.
compreson is good how about crank bearings and seals how many miles are these engines good tor thanks

Crank bearings are good virtually forever if the sled has been properly summerized every season. I don,t think I have ever seen a crank seal gone in a SRX ...it will run huge lean if it is toast tho.Remove the primary clutch & look for seepage. Spray WD-40 around crank stub with engine running. If rpm,s go up it is done.
thanks turk. i bought this sled cheap. for my son. just what to check it all over for next season

My buddy sold a '98 last year with over 9,000 miles on it and it was still running like new. He never even cleaned the powervalves on the thing, saying that if its still running good he isn't touching it, lol. They are rock solid.

Just to give you an idea, I just bought a 99SRX with 8300 miles that was riden very easy. I have pulled the jugs, and the cylinders still have almost all the factory cross hatches! Just check the things Turk mentioned. I also replaced the reeds just because I found a new set on here for 15 bucks shipped. You will also want to go through the clutches. Depending on how it was ridden you may have to freshen them up. Take a good look at the track too. Again it depends on how it was ridden.
