Hi everyone!
I wonder if it`s possible to buy a complete new (aftermarked) primary sheave for a 1996 Yamaha V-Max 600 XTC?. New Yamaha sheaves are damn expensive I guess.

The sled is not mine, but it was until I sold it to a friend and now the primary is giving him a hard time. Keeps frying the rollers, we`ve changed them to times. The last times we also changed the bushings that the roller slides on and the weights and their bushings. We expected everything to be ok now, it worked fine in the beginning, but then when we went up on the mountain and started riding in some pretty steep hills, the sled simply didn`t manage to pull, it din`t rew more then 5000rpm , it kind of sputtered so we thought it was the plugs, changed them but no difference. However the sled ran fine on flat ground/not too steep hills. I guess this comes from the fried rollers that was totally stuck?.

I hope my friend wount have to buy a new stock sheave, I guess it`s damn expensive..

We figured it must be better to buy an aftermarked sheave then buying new parts for the old one all the time. If we only knew why the rollers go to hell after only riding a 10kilometer or less..

Hope someone can help me with this:)

Remove the cover and spring...grab the moveable sheave and rock it to see how much it moves. Very likely the bushing is worn out.
Have the clutch taken apart and put a new bushing in the moveable sheave. It is a good idea to install a new cover bushing too, then you have everything running straight and true.

Ok thanks for the reply Chance !!

I did notice one thing when I was working on it, the moveable sheave seemed kind of "unstabile" , I could push it in "uneven" (I pushed it only on one side, and it mooved in on one side, and didn`t move in on the other. Couldn`t that be a sign of worn bushing in there?

I have never taken a primary apart, so it`s kind of hard for me to tell.

When I had the sled, one of the weights jammed up in one of the rollers. (that`s how it all started you can say, when I discovered the bad rollers). I was going around 75mph (full throttle actually) and when slowing down, the sled stopped and I didn`t understand anything, until I looked at the primary. One of the rollers had a huge "trace" in it, it clearly hadn`t been rolling so the weight had made a trace in it. However, the weight got stuch in the trace when I was going wide open, so the sheave was locked up. I hit the primary with my hand, and then suddenly the sheave popped back to normal position, and then I everything was like before. Could this have anything to do with it? something ruined inside the primary? Or is it likely a worn bushing?

:)

Sounds like a bad bushing. I've seen it happen where the weights will hang up and hold the clutch closed.

Ok Chance I hope it comes from a bad bushing then, I`m sick of this primary:)

This is the url to the microfiche image of the primary for this sled, maybe you could say what number the bushing is?. :) And maybe what other parts that should be changed when taking the primary apart?. I guess we will see what parts that need to be changed when we take it apart..

Another question, is it dumb to mess with the primary if you are a "nowise home wrencher" ? . I wrench munch on bikes and in a few moths I will start working as a motorcycle mechanic, but I don`t know much about the sheaves actually :)

Thanks for the help so far Chance:)

Here are som pics that I were suppost to post in the beginning of the thread.

(I had to reduce the number of pics due to the limited amount you are allowed to post)

Old parts taken off..

Installing new rivets in the weights. Probably not the correct way of doing it, but I guess its more important that the "weight" is there, then having a nice looking rivet

How they looked when I was finished.. I wasn`t pleased, they didn`t look nice, but I guess the pro`s have a special tool for this job, or ?

Our rides, The RX-1 one is mine, the sled with the primary issues in the middle, another friends RS Vector Mountain and his brother`s sled in the rear, a V-Max 4 750.

Wellwell

Definately sounds like the bushings are bad to me, this happens much more often on the twins than the triples. Get the moveable sheave bushing and the cover bushing replaced and see what that does for you. ;)!

Thanks alot for the replys Yamaholic & chance.
Let us hope that it is the bushings and that the primary will be OK after changing them.

Do I need some special tools to do this job?
Can I do this job totally "after the book" at home?.

I can`t wait to tore it apart and check those bushings. What else should be looked at when it`s apart?.

Another thing I noticed was that some of the plastic washers sitting on the sides of the rollers was missing (ruined) so the roller had "worn" on the spider itself , but I hope I can just grind off the rough edges and that it will be fine.

:)
