Excellent post Red even though none of us likes to read them.
Another thing we all need to be careful about, especially as we prepare to go ride with our buds is the peer pressure. While none of us wants to feel like a wimp, we need to realize that some folks are just faster riders and there's no need to ride over one's head just to keep up to the fastest rider. If they're any friend at all they'll wait for you at intersections and more importantly not give you grief about not keeping up. I'm totally conivinced that many accidents could have been avoided if people didn't feel pressured to ride over their abilities.

Excellent reply SledderSteve. The first time I ever went on a serious trip several years ago with friends, there were a couple of them who really liked to grab lots of throttle. There was a long stretch of trail where I was all by myself and when I finally caught up to them they said they had been waiting 20 minutes. While this is was nice, I think a better practice is to always travel in pairs at least. God forbid that I had had a problem or accident miles from anywhere and all alone. By the time my group had figured out there was a problem, I could have been in pretty bad shape or worse and finding me could have taken even longer.

Waiting for your riding partners at an intersection or trail crossing is not a good idea. I always tell people in my group to watch the person behind them, if you can not see their head light then slow down or stop (in a safe place). Look back often, even if you have mirrors, turn your head, that way the person behind knows you are keeping an eye on them. Riding like that eliminates the need for the stop and wait game, it also makes the people in the back feel safe when everybody is together. What is the point of riding as a group if you do not ride as a group.
