Can a short cover primary be updated to a tall cover style,
If so what would be needed for the upgrade?
Example: the primary off my 1996 Vmax-4

Change the cover and the spring.
Thanks for the info - however I have another question.
I was checking part #'s online and the 98-99 SX's use 8bv-17630-10-00
and the 02SRX & 03Viper use 8df-17630-00-00
Will both work and what is the difference?

98-99 SX's are short cover still. The 02 SRX & 03 Viper are long cover. I believe it was in 2000 when Yamaha went to the long cover on all models.

Yes all you have to do is get the new style cover and spring with desired preload (the colors will not be equivalent to the short spring)
Thanks for the info guys
So all I have to do it get a new style cover and a spring.
It's getting harder to find short cover springs in the preload/force I am looking for.

Anyone have an extra tall cover that they would like to sell?
I can get a new one for $60.00

Let me know what preload/force springs that you're looking for. I still have some short cover springs with some higher rate forces from "back in the day" when I used to dabble a little in racing.
