I am thinking of buying a Viper or an SRX. What are the differences of those two sleds? Would the SRX be ok for trails?

I think the majority of the site will reccomend the SRX over the viper because its easier to make a srx handle as good as a viper then it is to make a viper faster. However if your going to leave stock and want a trail sled the viper is a better handler just slightly less fast then the SRX.
Stock for Stock:
SRX = more hp and faster, more mod friendly as well
= Less suspension travel both front and rear
Viper = Less hp (15hp) but bigger bore engine helps produce great TQ
= More travel on both front and rear suspension systems
For me the looks of the viper still give me a woody and with triple pipes they are faster then a SRX but your just walking a line between reliability and performance.

for lakes or long wide open trails that stay somewhat smooth get the srx. for rough or beat up trails get the viper. if you ride mostly trails, the viper has more than enough power and a lot more suspension. most of the trails i ride on i cant hold it wide open for more than a couple seconds anyways. i think suspension is the bigger factor, and the viper isnt even the greatest for that, but a lot better than the srx.

Viper is about 25 h.p. less than '00-'02 srxs, and they have the EXACT same bore and stroke, viper is not bigger.

Had a 2000 SRX, very fast sled, not so good in the bumps. Did the longer rear suspension upgrade (longer Viper shocks), front shock extensions, was a little better. I then bought a 2002 Viper. A couple of miles an hour slower, but the ride more than makes up for the little loss of top end. Did the Viper shock upgrade, very nice riding sled now. Not as good as a REV, but a big improvement over the stiff OE shocks. I like the Viper looks too! Can run with mod 800 REV, beats the 600HO's, Viper is completely stock! Buy the VIPER!

DOH! I meant more aggressive porting and compression.
I was under the impression stock viper is 125 HP and the srx is 140 HP

Buy the much faster SRX and use the money you saved to buy a used viper skid for $300 bucks and bingo, best of both worlds. You will have to buy a front end kit then, but there are a ton of companies that make em. You never said what you intend on using the sled for? If you just want to buy and ride, then get the Viper. If you don't mind doing a few modifications and want to ride the fastest stock sled ever made, buy the SRX.
Oh, and just cause the SRX has short travel suspension doesn't mean you can't ride it just the way it is. Many have rode the stock setup for years without a complaint. It's stiff, but not unbearable. Mine is stock, but I plan on getting a Viper skid, but if I can't find one its no big deal. I'll still ride it all next year.

Viper - 120 HP
98-99 SRX - 138 HP
00-02 SRX - 145 HP

If you go off trail much, get the Viper. Viper's are much lighter in the front end, and you can feel the difference in deeper off trail snow.

I traded my 2000 Srx for A 2002 Viper, Missed the extra top end while riding
in northern Maine. But with the shock upgrade and the reverse I didn't miss the SRX. I still own with over 10,000 miles on it. I am planning on rebuilding the top end over the summer while waiting for my Apex GT. Loved the Viper over the 05 RX1 overheating junk I traded in. If you take a 97 Sx and made a wish list it would be a Viper. Hoping the same for the 03 Rx1 to the 06 GT. The Viper is still the best sled I ever owned…..

I had the same question last year. Wound up getting an 01 srx and haven't looked back. An awesome sled. If your light like me the stock rear susp is stiff. It's really meant to be that way. I did the long travel from Pioneer and that was a big improvement. Softer in the small stuff and a bit better in the bigger ones. Gotta reinforce the W-arm though, it's a must. It also corners like she's on rails. If ya like power you won't be disappointed. I've put reverse on mine too. Worth every penny.

I had a 02 srx and a 01 srx,i ended up selling them both and getting a 04 viper s.The ride was night and day compared to the srx, much better. As far as speed goes, yes the srx is faster but when your out ripping on the viper you will hardly notice the loss until you get on the lake.
