hello, first off, great site!!! I own a 99 SRX 700, and love every bit of it!!! I just bought it last year, and noticed the other day that the shaft that goes through the secondary clutch, moves in and out roughly half to three-qaurters of an inch. I was wondering if this was normal. The whole shaft, and secondary move in and out, but the bolt is tight. What could it be, is this normal?

You had better get into the chaincase, something isn't right there. There are lock colar bearings on that shaft, so NO the shaft shouldn't move at all. the clutch should have about 1/8 inch free travel on the shaft, but the shaft shouldn't move. maxdlx

If the shaft moves that much you wouls have to have 2 things wrong, the lock on the bearing behind the clutch isn't tight and the nut on the top gear is falling of ( to get 1/2" slop) This is if the shaft itself is moving.

so basically there is a nut right behind the secondary clutch, that holds the bearing in place? Check that, and also what other bolt are you talking about?
does this still mean I have to get into the chain case? If so, what all should i replace while i am in there, my sled has like 3900 miles on it. Prolly a good time to do the track also, let m wknow, thanks in advance

No, there is not a nut behing the secondary. There is a bearing with a clamp, and if that was loose the shaft still would not move in and out. The nut on the top gear retains the shaft. IF your shaft moves that much the nut on the top gear HAS to be loose, and if it moves 1/2 to 3/4" which is hard to do, it fell off. You need to tighten the gear and then retighten the bearing clamp in that order. If you have been driving it like that, look at other things, most likely there is something else wrong.

is the top gear in the chain case? Also, what else could be wrong, i will look at it this weekend. Also, would it even move iff the nut fell off, and i should be able to pull the shaft all the way out right, if the nut fell off, and I cant. It might just be the secondary clutch then, but i am pretty sure the shaft was moving also, I will have to double check. It might actually just be the clutch, because i do remember now that I was thinking I could just put a few more spacers in the front of the secondary, i will have to look at it again, thanks alot for the info.

go to www.yamaha-motor.com and look for your year of sled in the on line parts area
you can get an exact breakdown and then look at the answers people are giving you.
it might help to make better sense of the whole thing.
once you see all the parts laid out on paper it is usually easier to understand what people are trying to tell you.
good luck

again, what I told you is based on the fact that the shaft is moving as you said. There should be 3 or 4 spacers on the outside of the clutch and none on the inside (if your engine is aligned properly) when you are done. Even if all the shims were gone you wouldn't get 1/2" of play.

Chaincase end is under "track drive 2", item 24 is the nut 800 is talking about,
clutch end is under "secondary sheave", item's 21 are set screws to lock the bearing, item 20, to the shaft, also what 800 reffered to. Like he said, there should be NO lateral movement of the shaft itself.
