Out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone has ever seen this problem. I have a 99 SX700 and it appears that the pawl on the recoil may have engaged under full throttle. This in turn shredded the notched pulley and then blew the upper and lower crankcase apart. The sled was still idling fine after the problem, but there was tons of noise because the whole recoil was just dangling. I really think that all internal engine components are OK, the crank turns fine and the compression appears to be OK. The entire magneto area is fine other than the case missing around it.
Something on the recoil side went wrong, but it seems really weird. Any thoughts ?

Woodman ,I have a 98 700 same problem. It appears that the starter pulley bolts loosen up then stretch out the holes then presto the starter pulley flies around in the cases. There are some used cases out there.590$new. Used around 250-300. I used a 97 case which is slightly different. You have to put a bearing dowel pin in the pto side easy mod.Good luck.
