How hard is it to change this seal? Any special tools required? Any tips appreciated.

not too hard but you should pull the motor so you don't scuff up the inner seal race. You also need to inspect the pump shaft for corrosion. Doug

Thanks Doug. Is it absolutely necessary to pull the motor? I need to get this done before the weekend. That is, if I can find the seal locally. Anything else I should look out for?

The forums are down right now but I posted complete instuctions there (when they come up do a search for pump seal). I don't have time to do it right now. The seal is a commonly replaced part so most dealers will stock it. Unless your dealer is one of them dealers that thinks that stocking parts "cost" him money. Then he will have to order the part. It's about 12.50 for the seal and it's a 2 piece seal, the inner seal is a bit tough to get out even with my motor on the bench. The seal is made out of stainless and rubber with a big spring in the middle. The race has two outer areas where you can get pliers on to try and pull the seal. The problem is the seal has some special heat activated glue on it that really keeps it in there. My shaft also went bad and I figured the case needed to be split to get it out so I took just my motor to my dealer. I told him I really did not want the case opened up. He tried and was able to get the shaft out rather easy without spliting the cases. This was the first time he tried it that way. So, I got a new shaft and I had the seals removed before I brought it in. Made his job easy and he did not charge me for any labor. He just billed me for the shaft (I had already purchased all the seals my self) and he had seals and shaft in stock. As a side note my dealer was not shure if he had a shaft in stock and the owner said he would take one off another machine to get me back on the trail. That kind of service goes a long way in my book Stones Snow Sled in NY. Doug
