I have a 97 venture 600, and am having some problems lately with it. It will run fine for about ten minutes, then it will get bogged down when under load (like up a hill, or in powder). Then it will back fire and the only way to get it home will be with the choke half on. It was taken to the dealer last year for the same problem twice and the carbs were cleaned and the sensors checked. Any suggestions; could this be a smart carb problem?

My brother had a 600 venture with smart carbs and it ran like that....I think it was something in the airbox that they changed.....

I couldn't believe it when I read your message. My wife's 98 Venture 500 (twin) started doing exactly the same thing two weeks ago.
It started good one cold morning and after a minute or two of warm up it fouled one plug (same plug every time). I tryed changing plugs but it would not fire that cylinder and the plug was VERY wet. The next morning, I installed a fresh plug and it still only ran on the one cylinder. Thinking the fuel should have evaporaved by then, I put a coil and plug wires on it that afternoon and it seemed to correct the problem.
However, this weekend the same problem resurfaced over again (-15F). Its been very cold in Michigan so I suspect carb/choke icing possibly caused by water in the fuel system (on that side) causing the one carb choke or float to freeze and flood the cylinder. Its in my heated workshop tonight and I plan to try it after its warmed up. I will let you know what I find. Please do the same if you find something.

To expand on my previous reply, I pulled this from another thread on this forum.
"The twins on yamaha's have a problem where they collect the dust off of the belts in the carb intakes. He took out the carbs and cleaned out the intakes (which he said were really bad). The sled is incredible now, I didn't know I was driving without all my power, and boy does it sound nice now."
Guess what, before I put the coil on mine as previously stated, I had the carbs off and they were loaded with belt material. I cleaned them with carb cleaner but didn't have compressed air to really blow them out. I'm going back in them tomorrow with compressed air!

Boy does that sound familiar , I havbeen having the same problem the last two weekends . I found that if you let it idle for about twenty minutes it will run ok again untill you shut it off . I just took my carbs off out side as I want to take it apart frozen and posibly find out what is freezing up . I had this same problem last year but it only happened once . when I took it apart I found nothing . So I blew every thing out with air and put it back together. It was good for the rest of the winter . I don't think the 500 is having the same problem ,he is to rich and we are starving for fuel . I also pumped all of the fuel out of my sled and poured it into mu truck. I don't think there is any thing wrong with the fuel but I am not taking any chances . we will be analysing my carbs tomorrow . I will post results .

To Venture 500 I think you have a stuck need on the cylinder with the wet plug ,or possibly a bad float . Take it off and check for those things . also look for dirt in the needle .

Mine had water in the fuel . I totally emptied it and cleaned the carbs ,should be good to go .

The Problem seems to be fixed. I too think it was water freezing in the carbs. New plugs, and a couple bottles of gas line anti-freeze, a couple of times limping around the block and she kicked in. Put 20 miles on it last night with no problems.

My flooding of one carb was caused by ice in the float needle and seat.
ATTENTION - I learned a great trick if this happens again.
While the engine is running, bring up the rpms to a steady 2,000 and shut OFF the fuel shut valve. When the float bowls go dry and the engine begins to starve for fuel (rpms will increase at this point) turn ON the fuel valve again. This will flush the needle and seat with fresh fuel and in most cases wash the ice out into the bowl.

Idid the iso thing and left it idle untill it started to run good . problem with that was if I shut it off for 20 min it would be frozzen again . Now I know there is no water in the fuel .I dumped it into my truck water stayed at the bottom of the jug and I poured it off the top .The thing that bugs me the RX1 always gets gas at the same times as I do and never has any problems . We have made 5000 km together and he has never had to fix anything . If I ever buy another machine it will be brand newand have a four stroke engine .
