spark plug color

What if my plugs are fairly black?

How would I lean out the oil mix but not too much. It was 40* but next rides will be much colder.

oh...96 600xt

Don't touch them 40* it will run rich check them at 15* and get back to us. If your not fouling out at 40* should be close. What is your average riding temp and go with that.

I've got the same issue as Doug. Same sled, too. 96 Vmax 600XT. The thing runs great, but the plugs are always covered in oil. It's the same whether it's -5 degrees outside or 35.

Like I said, it runs like a champ, so I guess I might be better off not fooling with anything.

However, any comments as to the problem? Main jets?

Major,

That's the exact thing. I took it on a trip last year and put like 500 miles in 4 days on new plugs. At the end of it, the plugs looked just like the old plugs that I took out. The temps on that trip were like a high of 5*. The sled runs good. Uses lots of gas and oil but everyone I've ever talked to, says that the 600 loves both gas and oil. I still probably get 9 mpg.

It does run pretty much the same at 35 as 0.

Thanks.
