Getting ready for the season and am debating on silk or polar weight base layer. What are the advantages or disadvantages of either of them. It was down to -45 at night last year. Started to get cold.

I use Under Armor Cold Gear as a base layer, with Klim Midweight Fleece as middle layer, Klim jacket and bibs as outer layer. Rode at -20 1 night and the only thing cold was my hands. Stinkin' stator was bad on my Viper. All fixed now though. The wicking capabilities of synthetics allow me to work hard and stay dry AND warm. I was using Nike Dri-fit for a base, but found the Under Armor Cold to be warmer and just as dry. Hope this helps with your decision.

I use a synthetic base layer. Polypropolene XC skier type. Using 200 and 300 weight fleece mid layer and Klim outer layer. Never been cold but some days you have to keep moving to stay warm, especially if its windy. Some of the guys in my riding group are construction workers and swear by stanfields wick away. They claim it works really well.
