Hello.
I was out riding yesterday and my 98srx7 ran great all day.
We stopped for a bite to eat at about 8pm I went outside to start up my sled after and no tach and the temp light flashed 7 times. I got gas and shut the sled off and when I started it up it was still flashing 7 times. I started to drive home (very slowly) and about 30 second later the tach started working and the temp light stopped flashing.
I did notice that my sled sounded different. It didn't have that crisp triple sound that I love. Would sticking valves do this?
From what I have read on this board it is the power valves sticking.
Is this right? So I am going to clean them tomorrow and have a couple of questions. (I have read the postings on the tech pages)
First, should I warm up the sled first before I take the pv's off?
Do I need to buy new gaskets for them? Also when I remove the servo motor can I just clean the valves and put them back on without adjusting the servo motor?
Sorry for the long winded post but I like to have my ducks in row before I
start.
Thanks,
mul

I have a note written down in my '01 SRX 700 manual as 7 flashes being the servo motor. Check w/everyone else if this is right. Check your connections to see if it is plugged in good. If it turns out (after making positively sure) that your servo is bad, I have a spare. Give your local dealer a call about that code for that year. He should be able to help you. Good luck.

Thanks prophet, a mechanic friend said it sounds like a sticky valve.
Any one else have some input?
Warm up first?
New gaskets?
Best degreaser?
Clean just the valves without adjusting them?
I know that cleaning your valves might be a very simple job to some.
I don't want to mess anything up.
thnx,
mul

I've always re-used my exhaust valve gaskets, and they don't seem to ever leak. Don't use a wire wheel on a bench grinder to clean them. It appears to have some kind of coating on them that the wire wheel will take off. I scrape them with a razor blade, back-scraping the carbon off, and then scrub with scotch brite pad and brake cleaner, etc. I haven't found anything that just lets the carbon run off. Always takes some work.

I think you need to look at the wiring harness
I think everyone seemed to miss a important bit of information he described in his original post " the tach quit working" this is a sign of the wiring harness rubbing thru under the engine, unplug the harness from hood hinge area and pull the harness out from under the engine by the coolant bottle, you will find the harness is rubbed thru and will need repaired with tape and conduit. Its not a sticking valve, that will not cause the light to come on, it will only bog the sled down at 3/4 to wide open.

I went and talked to a yamaha mechanic today and he said the temp light flashing 7 times is my valves acting up. It would repeat this flash code with approx. a 5 sec. delay. I am going to clean them just to be sure.
I am also going to check the wiring harness like you suggested before I do the valves. I will post my findings.
Thanks mrviper700 and snowprophet1.

Rubbing Wires
Been there, done that.. You have a wire rubbing through.. Probably on the belly pan under the motor. Pull your pipes and start exploring...

I looked for a wire worn through today without any luck.
However I did take off my valves to clean them and found the number one cable is broke off.
Ordered a new one today.
$43.85 plus taxes. So do you all think it was a wire worn through or did I get the flash codes because of the broken cable?

Could this have done any damage to my motor?
