I gave up on UPS a while ago. Have your US supplier send it to you using the US postal service. They do a declaration at the time of mailing that Canada post uses to determine what taxes you owe. Its a better deal.

do not ship stuff ups period. usps will send stuff cheaper and delivers on saturday no xtra charge. cross border stuff is a usps must. broker fees kill you if you dont. i paid a 25.00 fee for my powderlite trailing arms that came from canada, didnt have a check and the ups driver wouldnt take cash. was a giant pain in the ***. i've decided i wouldnt send or recieve anything from canada any longer. too much border hassle. ski

Don't get discouraged sending and receiving from Canada. As long as you use Canada post or United States Postal service, the fees are low. It's the big shipping companies with their brokerage fees that kill cross border shipping. I've recieved and sent stuff and as long as you don't use ups, fedex etc everything goes well.

i never hear any u.s. resident getting charged any extra stuff, duty,s etc, thought it was just us

Once bought a jack shaft off of here, cost me 45 US and then 45 CDN for taxes. My wheels came in the other day, said the value of the 4 were $76, and the brokers fee was 48.... lucky for me the driver forgot to collect his money...

Here's the fine print from UPS's shipping page.
Never again will ship or receive via UPS to Canada
It's not fare to either buyer or seller
Please Note: Shipping rates quoted are estimates based on the information you have supplied. Shipping rates do not include duties, taxes or other non-routine customs brokerage charges. Other shipping charges, surcharges or accessorial charges may apply and your final shipping charge may differ based on your shipper characteristics and the characteristics of, and services requested for, packages actually tendered to UPS. Rates quoted here are based on UPS published rates and do not include incentives or special programs. If you have specially negotiated rates, contact your UPS account executive for a rate quote. Please see the UPS Rate and Service Guide or similar guides or rate documents as may be applicable in your jurisdiction for details. Rates may vary at retail locations.

I just have stuff shipped to relatives in Canada. Then pick it up when we are visiting.
I checked this all out a few years ago because of the horror stories I had heard, and this was the only way to ship things over the size or weight limit of Canada Post. If it is something smaller than the limit, then Canada Post and USPS is an ok way to go. I did spend a good deal of time in the US duties documents (which are all online) where there are enough categories and exceptions to kill a day a or 2 just reading them. Most vendors know better than to ship UPS or Fedex across the border because they pass the duty along (which they should) and then add broker fees for handling the duty. In reading the docs the shipper can pre-arrange the duties (which usually aren't very much) and simply add it to the bill.

Ding, is there any way to figure out much, if any, UPS is going to hit me tomorrow?
The tracking number says nothing about any moneys owed?

Hi Guys,
I have done this several time.
Smaller packagage can me marked as gifts and ship US or Canada post not UPS. When they ask you declared value lowball this number and the duties will be minimal. This is from US to Canada.

Maine: Unfortunately they do not seem to put that info on the tracking website. You may be able to get it by calling the customer service number. Did the shipper make any indication of prearranging any of the duty fees?

I doubt it, this is the first time I've heard of this issue.Did the shipper make any indication of prearranging any of the duty fees?
I sell hot wheels to people in Canada all the time, via USPS, & never had any complaints from the buyers about any extra fees.
But they do always ask to leave the value down to about $10 and list as a gift,as previously stated by yamyrider
