I know the 500/600's will fit on the Vmax-4's,
however I have heard something about the 500/600's needing to be machined?
Anyone care to explain why and what needs to be done and how do you determine
the difference beteween them if the Factory Id #'s are gone.

Thanks ;)!

the difference is the 800 secondary closed further. This was accomplished by machining the inside bottom of the stationary sheave, and the area where the wear plate for the belt deflection bolts sits. Look at the bottom of the sheave and see if the belt surface is under cut like a 1/4". If you're not sure, when a 800 sec is closed the movable sheave will go under the stationary, a 500 600 clutch the sheaves will just touch together at the bottom.

I'm thinkin' that the 800 secondary has a longer spline shaft on it, but then again it's been a few years since I owned an 800.

No, the spline on the 95 96 was the same, they are just further out in the shaft than the 97 and up

800's got it right, the regular Vmax clutches will bolt right up but won't work without being machined to let the sheaves close more, I tried it. I've got a guy that does em for $30, so its not a big deal.
