is it ok to use tranny fluid in the chaincase????????
Heard several people use it, but...........!!!!!
I have always used synthetic chain oil, and replace every eason but it gets pretty black and ugly looking by the end of the year.
I know I can buy a $5 can of chaincase oil, but i have cases of tranny fluid.

i'd say so. all the oil is there for is to cut down on friction and to lube it. just as long as it gets along with all the stuff in there (dunno if its would react with anything in there or have any properties that could be detrimental)

Snowtech did an article on this a few years ago, talking about all the people that swear by tranny fluid and that really haven't had any noticeable issues with it. Tranny fluid should definately take care of the lubing and cooling just fine, but it definately has a much lower sheer strength than a heavy gear lube or chaincase oil, so high load situations such as jumping or hard hook up where the chain is under quick hard tension would probably be better on gear lube. One benefit of tranny oil is that on the cold mornings the tranny fluild will flow and splash around much easier than the heavy gear oil, meaning lube gets to the bearings quicker because the fluid doesn't have to heat up before it thins out so much. For me, i will stick with gear/chaincase lube because i KNOW that it holds up, but i also can't see any big issues with tranny fluid.

I ran sybthetic 4x4 tranny fluid in my sx for 3 years. never had a problem, and the guts looked just like new when I sold the chaincase off. I actually had less filings on the dipstick with it than with gear lube. Maxdlx

Use a chain case lube or gear lube with extream pressure additives in it.I know that i wouldn't be replacing my chain case lube with trany fuid in my srx..

Theres nothing wrong with 75-W90 synthetic gear lube, just that the synthetic chain case lube is thinner, dosen't get as viscus as gear lube does when it gets real cold.I myself run half and half Amsoil chaincase lube and Amsoil 2000 series 75-W90 in my chaincase.make it thinner the75-W 90 weight and thicker the the caincase lube.with all the same lube quality as a thich heavy lube like 75-W90.One thing to keep in mined if you have any RV silocone or RV seals sealing the chaincase that certain synthetic gear oils will eat the RV sealant

Looks like this is "one of those things". I have read a lot of info about this and there is no definite answer. Some same yes, others say no. But I have yet to read about a chaincase blowing apart because of using tranny fluid.
One thing I did notice, the yes answers are from people that have tried it.
No is from people, that don't think it's right.
The main reason I was asking is because I change the oil every year. The stuff that comes out of the case does not look too healthy. Thought there might be something better.
Anyways, thanks for your opinions........ :yam:

Using what the manufacturer recommends will never hurt you. $5 a year is no big deal compared to the cost of the machine or gas for the weekend.

ATF in the chaincase

ATF in the chaincase, well, lets see most any late model stickshift car/truck uses ATF in it, so the argument over the sheer property's and such are BULL>>>>, gear to gear loads in STD transmissions are much harder on oil then a gear to chain contact. I have used it for probally 10 years and have never had a problem, its cheap, low drag, high detergent and you can get some anywhere in case of a gear change while out on vacation.

Does this make the sled any faster, NO.

Its just simple and you dont pay 3 times the value for a name on a bottle at a dealer.
