When cleaning carbs...what am I cleaning?!?

Total newbie here guys and I want to learn. To preface I have never even SEEN a carb before in my life. I understand how they work but not the maintance of them. So in simple terms what do I clean on each carb for my viper? Here is a pict of the bowl cover off. Also do I need any special tools or cleaners? Thanks for helping a dummy! :rocks:

I take out the both jets and soak them in carb cleaner.Then i take my air compressor and carb cleaner and blow out all the passage ways in the carb.Yours looks pretty clean so i wouldnt do much more than that.
 
Just the main and pilot jets? Here is a picture with some more questions. Thanks!

Also I pulled out the main jet and its say 160 on it, the sled has a fix CAi intake on it but this seems a little fat don't you think for a otherwise stock sled?
 
Your what is this is the pilot jet, your pilot jet is the what is this. Hope that makes sense. Maxdlx
 
Got it cleaned and re installed she fired right up and idled like a champ. I had two plugged pilots.

Any thoughts on the 160 jetting? It ran a little fat last year but still got around 12 mpg.
 
Yeah the tech pages is wrong it shows the brass vent tube as the piolet jet. Figured it out quick though once I saw how th emain jet worked.

BTW I turned the fuel screws 2.5 turns and it seemd to cure my throttle hang I had last year, but we'll see once I hit the trail.
