is there an easier way, such as square drives or allen heads to replace phillips screw into rail, phillips gets so tight cant turn screw and then head strips slots.dealer said they dont carry different screw heads.97 venture 600 2-up.

as said above, retap the hole. then get two new screws after the tapping. it will make life lots easier. the first time is always the worst. ski

another option, once you have the threads cleaned out put some never seize on the new screws,or drill them out and through bolt them, end of problem.i just replaced my hyfax and didnt have a problem, but i put a dab of never seize on the threads.

As stated above, clean them out. I always thread the new ones in a couple turns, then back them out, and repeat by going another turn each time and then backing out. Eventually, they'll go all the way in fairly easy. It's also quite easy to cross thread those even though you'd swear they were threaded properly. Often, just to make sure, I'll slide the hyfax back out of the way to visibly see the hole and thread it in to check for accuracy; plus it gives me a reference as to the angle of the screw.

(I have many of those screws [new] on hand just for such an occasion).
