1996 VMAX XT (proaction) track

What is the max pratical lug height on a 96' VMAX 600 before damaging the heat exchangers? I'm currently running a stock track (5/8) and can't get it to "hook up", I'm considering a 1-1.25 track.

I have a '96 Vmax 600 XT. I am facing this same issue. I called 6 Yamaha dealerships and a few local shops looking for an answer. My sled has no heat exchange in the front. They're on the side and there's one in back. Most dealers mentioned that the issue was not with the track hitting the heat spreader in the back but rather is might not clear the frame/tunnel up front.

They confirmed that the suggested/common pick length for a stock 5/8" track was 1" and and a track of that same lug height shouldn't have any clearance issues. Nobody knew if the 1.25" track would clear the frame up front. They all thought it would be really close...

I am getting the 1-inch track.
 
I'm thinking of replacing the 9T drivers with 2x 8T outside drivers and 2x center anti-rachet drivers. Will also replace top gear with a 24T and 70L chain to bring my ratio to 174 (i'ts now 176). I still don't think I'll have enough room for a Camo 1.25 ripsaw (which i'd prefer), although if I change the top idler wheels with 5" (currently 6") wheels this should provide enough clearance (there seems to be enough adjustment on the skid to pull the track back with a smaller wheel and there seems to be enough clearance for the shock).

This seems like a logic approach but not sure how this will affect the geometry of the skid.
 
Installed a 1.5 camo track in my 96' Vmax600. Changed the drivers from 9T to 8T, top gear from 21 to 24 (bringing my ratio close to stock), drilled out new axle mount points at the rear wheels and rear shock (raising the tunnel 1"). The stock 72L chain was tight on the adjuster (backed off 100%) although I was able to fit hand tight. I'm seriously considering replacing 24T with a 23T for next season (should also give me a better bottom end). Moved the mount point of the transfer rod on the skid to allow full movement.

The track clearance to the bulkhead with the 8T drivers is about .75" about 1" (at the back) from the heat exchanger protectors.
Running the track raised with about 1.5" of slack at 7-8K rpm. had no problems.

This was intended as a budget mod, ...I purchased the track, drivers and gears off TY forum and sold my existing track, ...to date I've spent the following;

Took out my retreaded Vmax today on what little snow is left in the mountains. She really "hooks up" now, ...unbelievable for a 96' 600. Anticipating a little extra drag with the new track I lightened up my 8AB's with .8 grams in the heel, GPG spring, and tightened up my secondary at 70. The machine pulled like crazy out of the hole, but 5,200 engagement isn't very drivable (perhaps I over compensated). I put the stock primary LPL back in with 3 shims, engagement is now about 4200-4300, shifting at 8,000-8,100.

Next, ...adjustable transfer rods.
 
skid relocation:

With the track removed and the sled raised from the rear, used a floor jack for skid position adjustments.

Ran a string from the front 8t driver to the rear idler wheel to gauge track clearance for a 1.5" track to the heat exchangers and clearance from the front shock. In the end the skid mount points were relocated from 3/4 - 1" from the original mount points (less in the middle, more at the rear, ...see pics).

Used a cardboard template of the original mount points to make the new holes.

Transfer rod was moved down on skid, parallel to 'H' arm with full movement.

5th. pic - track clearance to heat exchanger (solid 1")

Measure twice, drill once.
