Can anyone explain why Yamaha would do something as Stupid as make spark plug wires non-replaceable on the 97 vmax 500xt (and others I'm sure). Of course I found this out the hard way and broke a plug wire off at the coil trying to replace them with some NGK wires.

Is there an aftermarket coil or a different model from Yamaha that will allow a plug wire change? Or am I stuck buying a new coil every time the wires get cracked or anything?

Thanks -Steve

Did ya try un screwing the wire? That's the way they are put in, some with a little bit of glue......

the wires were cracked near the coil. So I assumed that was bad and went about replacing them. Anyways I found a new coil is only $50 canadian so Its not that big a deal I guess....

Allright.....found this old post because I had the same problem. Just a few more questions for the electrically inclined guys. I am definately not one of those guys.

1. Does the length of plug wire matter. The ones I took off were @ 96 miles long....can I replace with just enough to do the job.

2. Any special new caps needed. Or can I use some good sealing new ones that I can get from a small engine dealer in town. Problem w/ resistance ?

3. I have access to 38 strand wire w/ a fiber braided outside. It is the same outside diameter as regular 19 strand replacement wire. Anybody see any problem with it. Probabally has very low resistance.

4. Does the system need a certain amount of resistance to perform at 100%.
