I have a Viper with the stock pipe. What grade of gas do you guys run? I ran supreme since it was new. I am wondering if I am wasting money. Is regular good enough?

I've put at least 3000 miles on stock Vipers mostly running regular unleaded and had no problems.

i always run premium in the UP, because you never know how long the reg has been there, most guys seem to run premium, but at home i will use regular as well....

I used to think that too. However, look at it this way. Most cars and trucks use 87 octane, so 87 should be fresher than 89 and 93.

Makes a lot of sense what captain said, want ever they go through the most, you know you'll be getting the freshest gas possible.

Thanks. I thought I read a post here last year that said to run Supreme. It should run better then on regular as it is more explosive then supreme. I will save some coin at the pump too. Gas has come down a lot here. Thank god.. ;)!

regular unleaded isn't refined as well as supreme.. There are also different additive packages than regular unleaded.... The higher in elevation you are, the LESS octane number YOU NEED to suffice!!! The lower you are, the higher number you need.... Regular unleaded burns FASTER and HOTTER than super unleaded does. so you would think that it would run better??????YES????????? The answer is NO (not exactly). A motor that is designed to run on 87 or 88 octane, will run better with 87 or 88 octane fuel.. and WORSE on 92 or 93 octane fuel... Here it gets a little tricky, SUPER unleaded is a LOT CLEANER fuel that Regular unleaded is.... That could have a SMALL EFFECT on the longevity of your engine... The dirt and enzymes that are suspended in the regular fuel are USUALLY removed (for the most part) in Super unleaded... Super is filtered better!!!! ALSO, your carbs are jetted REAL FAT from Yamaha to prevent possible burndowns (and warrant repairs).. A good rule of thumb is "when it is BELOW ZERO outside, use super".. There are MORE oxygen molecules the colder the ambient air. more oxygen makes your motor LEANER and HOTTER... Super unleaded will SLOW the burning process and creates a little more security blanket when you decide to open it up on a frozen lake to see how fast your sled will go!!!!! Will you notice the difference????? probably not!!!!!!!! Another thing on powervalved motors............ Depending on which oil you use,,,,,, you will notice a difference in the cleanliness of your powervalves!!!!!! PLEASE dont take this out of context!!!!!Relative air density, humidity, ambient air temp, YOUR DRIVING HABITS, elevation, and fuel and oil ALL have something to do with POWERVALVE cleanliness. I see people on this forum say things like" I USE YAMALUBE and MY POWEREVALVES ARE CLEAN".... Yamalube has ALMOST NOTHING TO DO WITH dirty powervalves!!!! (I know I am going to get some flack from that statement!!!) JETTING has MORE TO DO with dirty powervalves than YAMALUBE does...... (let me save myself here) SYNTHETIC OIL burns CLEANER (because it has a different detegent package) than conventional oil does!!! (thats a fact JACK!!!) so lets say this......." using synthetic oil and super unleaded will in fact make your motor LAST LONGER" Taking for granted your jetting is correct and your driving habits are correct, "you're powervalves should look better too"!!!!! I have 3 vipers an 02 an 03 and an 04er... The 02 and 03 powervalves look fine!!!!! The 04 is always dirtier than the rest... My girlfriend drives the 04 and she drives it like a FARM TRACTOR.. Same synthetic oil (klotz) and same BP super unleaded fule as the other 3!!!!.... The extra 50 or 100 dollars a year yu spend on synthetic oil and super unleaded will save you at LEAST 100.00 a year in motor work (providing you take it to Yamaha dealer to get fixed). if you do your own motor work (and like doing it) Its cheaper (usually) to run yamalube and regular fuel... There you have it in a nutshell!!!!! Gary Oles nosboy

The difference from 87 to 93 is only about $2 a day (on a 10-gallon gas tank), so its not like its a huge fuel cost difference.
However, if you ride 2000 miles a year, that cost could add up.
My Polaris has a timing switch on it, which is kinda nice. I can set it to regular and run the cheap stuff (87) or I can set it to "premium", run 93 and get all the power the engine can put out. Its a nice feature. However, if you have knock sensors (like most newer 2-strokes have), you probably dont need the octane switch...

I run Synthetic Ipone oil. My sled has never had regular in the tank yet. It doesn't seem as zippy as it should be. I might try going to down to mid grade and see how she works. Plus is basically 50% reg and supreme 50% mixed to together. What does it say in the Vipers manual to run ? My buddy bought a Rev600HO today. I want to beat him bad. I got to get this thing setup.. ;)!
