My 01 700 sxr is stalling, tach is erratic, headlight flickers and is missing intermittently. Any ideas that would help me find this problem?

Could be a number of things . . .
Time to start checking for wiring harness damage, and testing electric components. If you are up to doing some electrical testing, we can give you some pointers. If not, time to visit a TY buddy, or a good service dealer.

Like ding said check for shorts in wiring. What I like about ty is different opinions and simpler solutions. When it happens to you personally and you freak you always think of the worst. I hope it is simple.

I am going to check for wiring shorts and other problems. I have heard of problems with wiring under the engine. If anybody has some ideas of where to begin looking please let me know. Thanks

Make a note (or take a pic) of the wire harness routing. Disconnect the wiring harness from the hood, and all the attachment points back to the engine. Then you can pull the entire harness out from under the engine. This where it usually rubs the most.

This is the classic Headlight Relay problem. Get part # 90891-50137-00.
This harness will connect to the hi/lo beam harness, and down around to the headlight relay; of which a new one is included with the part. Although it is possible that the main engine harness is rubbing somewhere, definitely check for that, but I'll bet you need the headlight relay update...............it's a service bulletin in the '02 Tech Update Manual; pages 6-19 thru 6-22.

I just had the same exact problem w/ the same exact machine. It turned out to be a rubbed wire below the handlebars. The area behind the airbox along the metal tube, there are many wires mashed together. Give these a close look after removing the plastic body parts.
This was the only area I didn't check on my machine and it turned out to be a BIG mistake<$>. After I checked all the wires to the hood area and in/under/around the engine compartment,(like I read on a reply to my post a couple weeks ago) and cleaned the areas, and re-taped all wires I was stumped. So off to the dealer it went. I told the "kid" at the service counter the problem and that I already checked the wires in the engine area. A week later and 5 hours worth of labor they found the wire by the handlebars after they tore apart the motor. They also tried the headlight relay problem, but that wasn't it, and they didn't mention anything about the service update.
If I only would have kept looking a little more, I could have fixed this myself. You should try the same.
