Talked to a shock rebuilder today and he said - "New sleds should have their shocks rebuilt at 500 miles as the shocks have break in oil in them from the factory"

He also said he could rebuild my Viper shocks with 2 speed valving to smooth out the ride at slower speeds as well as riding agressively.

Does anyone agree or can verify this?

i dont agree with all have to be done at 500 miles theory. do they need to be serviced at intervals? YES. those intervals depend on riding conditions, sled maintainence, rider style and body weight ect... some shocks need service sooner than others no doubt. as far as valving, it is personal preference like clutch set ups. one wont work for all and vise versa.

i service my shocks every other year to every third year depending on the ride quality i am recieving from the set up i currently run. if my ride is suffering or the shocks are fading, leaking ect.... i get them serviced.

bruce at b-line control has a great shock valve package for the vipers. as does, maxxperf, and pioneer. the more info you can give your shock person, the more personal attention they can give your individual valving packages. ski

2 to 3 years on KYBs before a rebuild is needed. Ohlins, 3 to 4 years. Ryde FX after every weekend...

I kind of thought that "break-in oil" was a bunch of it. Does that mean every new set of shocks has "break-in oil"? My sled only has 1200 miles on it, and I can't believe it needs to be rebuilt. I'm about 260 dressed for riding, do you think along with revalving my shocks, i could use a heavier spring?

I had 9000 miles on my ohlins on the old 97 600 sx. had it since new and traded it in on feb 8th 2003 and NEVER had them rebuilt. they rode as perfect as ever. had the rears redone a few times though lol!

I hear you on the ohlins, i have seen 8000 miles out of them no problem with VERY little charge lost, they are definately some durable pieces. ;)!

ya, I want them for the front of the viper in the WORST way! I was pissed when I got my sled, they showed the viper S like 2-3 weeks later :( o-well, got a good price on mine lol
